Unhappy Horn

Okay guys,

I've been to the VW dealer six times now.

Let me first say my horn stopped working when I was disabling my DRL's. I disabled the DRL's by pulling the relay "173" all was well. Then a few days later notice my horn did not work when someone cut me off on HW 75.

I don't know if it is a coincident or it’s related to something I did by removing the DRL relay, but the fact is it does not work!

I have now replaced the two people mover horns (high and low range) the relay for the fog lights/horn "53" and still no horn. The dealer said they have no idea what to check for next. I stumped!!!!

Can anyone suggest anything to try?

Thanks

HD

FYI - I have a 2002 1.8 turbo

This may sound stupid but did you check the fuses?

I too have a horn problem. The only time the horn works is when you use the key fob to lock/unlock the car. Other than lock or unlocking the car using the key fob you can push on the horn all you want and new get it to blow. Any ideas out there?

There are two different horns. One for the alarm and one for the steering wheel.

My alarm hard works FINE!!! It's the steering wheel horn which does not work!!!!!

Where are the horns located? Are both located together? I have the Volkswagen New Beetle Service Manual by Bently Publisher but I can't locate any reference to the horns. I am having the same problem. The alarm horn works fine but the steering wheel horn does not. I think the contact in the steering wheel works because you can hear the contacts in the relay close when you depress the horn button in the steering wheel but still no horn. Now that I know there are 2 seperate horns all I need to do is locate the horns and how to access them. What parts and pieces have to be removed to gain access.

Actually there are three horns. I have the manual to and your right there is no reference. There are two horns located in the front drivers side finder well for the steering wheel horn. There is also one right in front of the passenger’s side front seat under the hood; this one is for the alarm.

This is what I did; I removed the front left wheel (driver’s side) and then remover the finder well plastic lining. Then voila!!! There they are just to the left.

I will take a look this weekend when I have a chance. I think this may solve the problem. I believe I am getting a good connection from the steering wheel through the relay (clicking noise at relay) when horn button is depressed and up to the horns. I may just have some bad horns. If that is true I will be looking for a used pair. Thanks

Default Both horns dead

I find it hard to believe that both horns could fail at the same time but they did. I found a pair on ebay and removed and replaced them and they worked. For a year I had been putting off taking it to the dealer for repair but this forum told me where the horns were located how to remove them and all is well now.

I've had no horns for about two years now. It originally started with the low tone horn, it would sound shorted when pushed. Eventually it would no longer work, only the higher tone was working. Then one day it stopped as well. Dealer could not find what was wrong so I gave up. I replaced the relay/fuse/horns/clock spring contact in steering wheel and measured current flow at the wires that connect to the horns themselves and there is no current now. I think the horn wires are cut somewhere after the relay. I am going to once and for all trace these down when I have time and post what I've found. On a side note I have a pack of Dixie air horns I'm going to install that should compensate. I'm going to own a Hazzard county Beetle!!!
