Default What type of power steering fluid?

What type of power steering fluid do I need. Standard power steering fluid like most cars take, or some kind of special VW only potion, like all of the other fluids?

Thanks,

JC

Use the VW power steering fluid. Think I paid $30 for a big bottle at the stealership. It was a white bottle, labeled "power hydralic fluid" or something. In small print it reads, "for power steering, other applications." or something to that effect.

One of my power steering lines burst yesterday and I pulled off to the nearest service store in this case my local Midas and they filled my power steering tank with a bottle of standard power steering fluid right off of the shelf. Does anyone know if this is going to be a problem? mixing non VW special sauce with the stuff that was in there from the manufacturer?

Yeah, drain it all out and start over with VW fluid. Probably ok for a temp fix, but I wouldn't run it like that all the time.

A friend told me that standard power steering fluid will eat the seals, has anyone heard of this. Thanks for posting,

I stopped the guy at Midas before he added anything and asked him if the car took special VW only fluid and he told me that power steering fluid was all the same and then he proceed to put his "off the shelf" fluid in my resevoir. Should I hold them liable for anything?

I went in today to let them know that VW puts synthetic fluid in and if his "off the shelf" fluid was not exactily compatible then it would need to be flushed. He agreed. and isn't going to charge me any more for the flush. I have to buy the fluid though. I would have had to buy some fluid anyway to refil the system... I am just out a couple more $$ on another quart or so

i would save the receipts and note the tech's name in case the steering craps out in a month or so. Hopefully you will be ok.
