limp mode is when you can't boost over 5psi in any gear.

Sounds like you may have problems with the throttle body. My car is in the shop right now for a bad throttle body. It's not a cheap fix if it is the problem.

Any lights? Codes?

Limp mode for me was a drop in boost power at 3k rpm. Kinda like you took your foot off the gas. Did you get a CEL? If you did go to autozone and let them scan it and tell us what codes come up.

first thing i would get would be a boost guage and watch your boost. could just be lag or even a vacuum leak.

find some1 with a VAG-COM... you'll know your in limp mode because it will be like driving a 2.0L there is practically no boost at all.

the cag can do a throttle body alignemt for you and also get the codes for you...

good luck

It usually resets when you turn the key off and restart. I have only heard this ... never have had limp mode and Happy at 18-19PSI Max.

Cause ... boost exceeding either 21 or 23psi ... usually seen in cars that someone has been swapping N75 valves, or with manual boost controllers, but I am sure a busted vacuum line on one of the N valves could cause it also.

Your MAF or TB is going bad... my guess it TB... Thats not limp mode at all.... Try cleaning it.... Also have someone check the soft codes with a VAG.. This my sound kinda lame but does it go away with the traction control off? When you start making some good power and the car spins the tires alot the traction control makes the car feel like it shuts off..
