Default New (to me) NBC 1.8t - oil question

I just received a 2004 uni-red convertible with a 1.8t - complete with nose and antlers! I've driven it and checked under the hood. Everything has a thin film of oil on it! The engine cover, batery box, airbox etc. I don't see anything (leaks) under the cover and the hoses seem to be tight - it almost looks like an oil change accident - left the dipstick or cap off - since everything is on top of the engine. But - the insulating blanket on the inside of the hood is not oil soaked. I'm a little concerned - can this engine blow oil out the dipstick? It seems to fit snugly but not too snugly - the o-ring is in place.
I guess time will tell if there is a problem - anyone have any insights?

I bet you it's not oil, it's just ArmorAll from an engine detailing.

Welcome to the Org, click my signature for my '04 convertible.

You could be right - I had about convinced myself this is the case - but do they put so much on it drips off under the car?

It's possible. Call your dealership and ask.

Either that or, after changing the oil before selling it, they took it for a test drive and left the cap off. Take it back and ask them about it.

I have done oil changes on mine ... at least twice, and started it to circulate the oil and fill filter to top it up to the right amount .... leaving my cap off. This usually causes oil to spray on the cover, the windshield and anyplace else nearby. Either that happened, or it was detailed. Besides, Mobil1 5W30 does make a decent protectant for the engine cover anyway.
