Default In desperate need of help!!!

My 2000 1.8T Beetle died on me. I was driving down the street and hit the gas and I heard a "thud/pop" noise from the passenger side of the engine. The car imeadiately began to misfire and shut down. I pulled over and looked under the car and saw that a rubber hose that connects to the turbo charger (about a 3" diameter) had come off and oil was leaking from it. Any idea what's going on? Have I blown my turbo? Anyone can tell me how to replace the turbo? Thanks in advance!!!!!

You shouldn't have to replace the turbo. Which hose is it? Is it under and to the front, or above and to the rear/driver's side? Sounds like either your intake hose or intercooler hose popped off. The car will run like poop if either one of those things happen.

Pics would help. How much oil was there? That is also important.

Here is a KO3S replacement DIY (without pictures)

Here's a KO4 install on an Audi TT (with lots of pictures)...This is a FANTASTIC write-up!

If you have to replace the turbo, I would suggest a KO3S turbo (from a later model car) It has a KO4 compressor wheel, and generates more boost.

all you did was blow a hose off. Probably because of a loose connection from the factory or some other random occurance. Put it back on and clamp it tight and you should be fine.

There was enough oil to cause a scare, but not half a quart or anything. Here are some pics of the problem and you can see (barely) how much oil there is on the ground. Thanks!!

Yup...looks like the lower IC hose popped off your pancake pipe.. I don't think that's enough oil to be concerned about. I'd put it back on*

So is it normal to have that much oil in the hoses? If it wouldn't of popped off, would I have just never known about the oil being there?

it is normal to have oil in the boost plumbing. You're totally fine. Just put the pancake pipe back into the coupling and clamp it down tight and go about your normal driving routine. For extra security, you may want to get a second hose clamp to use right next to the factory clamp. It had to have been loose because I (and many other people) put over 15psi through these connections with no problems.

Looks like someone put a shreader clamp on there already. That hose may be damaged from it, that worm clamp is not OEM ... I can't tell from the pix .... but if it is a Gator Clamp you should not have any shreading of the hose. Clamp it back down ... check it with each oil change to make sure it is tight, I still have all the OEM plumbing on that side and have been putting 18 - 20 PSI through it for almost 2 years without a problem like that.

Ok, I've put the hose back on and everything seems to be fine. How will I know when the turbo is getting ready to die?? Thanks for all of the help!!! Oh, and Merry Christmas!

You will know after it dies. Turbo failure on stock cars is not terribly common. Don't worry about it.
