Default Difficulty, layout of center TDI pipe mod for 1.8T?

So... How was it for you?
How much is the pipe, and does it have a bolted flange at one end, and clamp at the other? I want to do this but haven't seen the underbelly of my NB yet. Thanks in advance!

Sorry, thought peeps knew what this was. Removal of the resonator (1st muffler behind the turbo and cat) can be done with a TDI pipe since the TDI does not have this resonator. Makes the resonator delete easy and stock in appearance supposedly?
and if any1 has recordings of the sound I'd appreciate hearing them (stock rear muffler only)

The resonator delete was easy. No flanges just sleeve clamps. The stock resonator attaches to the downpipe with a clamp which you can reuse and you need to buy another since you'll be cutting the resonator off before the axle. The TDI pipe runs around $65. Since you're on the east coast, try VWpartsvortex.com and do a search in the mechanical parts catalog.

I had a GHL 2.5" turbo-back system which I took out and went back to stock. (long story) With the TDI pipe, it doesn't sound much louder than stock. I also didn't feel much power loss going down from the 2.5". Maybe it's because my car is chipped. Perhaps gains will be more noticeable on a car with a stock ECU.

Hey, thanx for the info! I doubt the gains will be anything at all for my stock ECU. But the sound is what Im looking for...

Yeah, unless you change it to a cat-back system, the sound won't be much louder.

Would you suggest removing the suitcase (rear ) muffler instead? I don't mind loud, just not TOO loud!
Example: Ricer sound=NOT.
Euro car sound=YES
Cop magnet @ idle=NO
I won't be able to do a catback or turbo back system for at least a year or two, and the stock system is in great shape (hard to justify to the wife)

do you have downturned exhaust tips or do they come out under the bumper? A loud exhaust with downturns is supposed to drone pretty badly when you're in the car, as the sound resonates between the street and the body.

The "suitcase" is the resonator near the rear axle that the TDI pipe replaces. I'm running the no-suitcase setup right now and it doesn't sound much different than stock. I haven't run the system without the rear-most muffler so I can't say how loud it'll be. The muffler weld on my 2.5" turbo-back system broke and it woke the dead. It was replaced under warranty but the new muffler can was 2/3rds the length of the original and it was almost as loud as not having one. So I ended up yanking it. It had a not-ricey euro sound but it was just ridiculous, especially the highway droning.

if you remove the rear muffler with the turn down pipes it will have an exhaust tone but no "ballsy" sound to it, its like a straight tone. but not too loud.

if you remove the small resonator behind that muffler it will have the rasp, engine noise to it.

trust me. I did it.

then i decided to remove them both.
now its just a raw sound.
its not ricey, it has definition to it.
but remember its alot louder. its not to the point where you get in trouble.
but your deff not sneaking up on anybody.
on the freeway it can get kinda irritating, with just a steady tone.

you don't need to buy a pipe from a TDI.
just get an exhaust shop to put a regular pipe on. they can bend it or whatever if need be

Great advice... Thanks!
With the bug, I want to have a nice sound and if it drones at 4000 rpm, so be it. I just don't need to be stopped every two miles. Some of the police around here can be shall we say, anal?
As for the center pipe- oh yes, much cheaper at a shop to have a piece made up. I rarely go with a custom, pre-made system for this reason alone. It's very inexpensive to have a system made the way YOU want, using the muffler YOU LIKE! This will probably be my stop-gap until it rots out. This is where the aftermarket pre-made's shine, and at that point i'll go turbo-back. So someday I'll plop $600-800 into a "real" exhaust, just not anytime soon.
