Default coolant leak near turbo?

i tried the search but it didnt help.

im noticing a burnt coolant smell under the hood and when i looked with a flashlight the two hoses goin into firewall had some wetness on them and it was steaming around the turbo area. is there a coolant hose in that area or something i should look for? i donbt think its oil because it wasnt cloudy smoke like burnt oil, smelled more like coolant

my temp light flashed red today too for the first time. so i added coolant and that went away. it was pretty low.

any help would be appreciated im new to vw's and turbos. thanks a bunch

The hoses going into the firewall are heater core lines, supplying hot coolant into the core for your heat. If they are wet, you may have to repair or replace one or both. Maybe someone will chime in and tell you the difficulty of changing the lines??? If they are clamped in the engine bay, it may be an easy swap.
BTW, Don't go driving all over the place with the coolant leaking. The line may burst eventually, dumping your coolant out quick! If you see the light come on make sure you stop in the first safe place and refill. Keep some duct tape around just in case till it's fixed!!!

If it's coming from BELOW those firewall hoses DONT drive it!!!! That would be a turbo coolant line....

does the turbo use any coolant hoses or is it all oil cool used. im new to this.

after i filled the coolant up i drove it a few miles til it warmed up and the cold light went away just to make sure the temp light didnt come back. it was when i got home from then i noticed somethin is leaking back there. so the coolant isnt just pouring all out yet, just a minor leak so far. the coolant bottle was still mostly where it started at after i filled it

Yeah, the turbo has two lines, an input and output for coolant. It also has oil lines too. It's cooled by both, but the coolant flow is aided after shutting down the motor by an after-run electric pump that continues to circulate the coolant through the turbo for several minutes after key-off.
All I can say is, FIND that LEAK!
It's prolly the heater lines unless the coolant is coming from the motor side and not the firewall or attached lines.

You might have a leak in the metal coolant line- fix it now. My wife did not and now we are putting in a used engine....

I agree. It runs along the passenger side of the engine compartment under the engine mount. They corrode from the outside in. There are 2 straps that hold wetness and debris against the line. I had to replace mine and it was difficult to trace the leak at first until it got worse and it got worse quickly.

hmmmmm that reminds me. I really need to get a part number for that part so I can order one for Pomelo. Mine is all rusted and starting to leak.

Sigh... it really is a never ending battle keeping these lil clown cars on the road.

Because of the potential of ruining your engine and high price of repair; have your cooling system pressure tested. Generally, when the system is pressurized, the leak will be obvious and the coolant should run out of the leaking area. Then fix the leak ASAP! Most shops don't charge too much for a pressure test of the system; since this is a vw, there isn't a traditional radiator cap; so, the pressure has to be done at the coolant reservoir. Good luck and don't ignore this problem.
