Default Delay in Gear Shifting?

I have an '03 Automatic GL Hatchback. I've owned it for less then 2 weeks, so please bear with me being a newbie... but I was just wondering if this was maybe normal at ALL with the "triptronic" trannys these cute beetles have;

If I am backing out of a parking spot or something of the sort, I go into reverse, back up, and then shift into Drive. In any other vehicle I've owned, it shifts almost immediately. It seems with my new beetle I have to give it a second to feel it kick into gear. It seems to shift into drive faster if I hold my foot on the brake the entire time until I feel the shift... Hard to explain this process without physically seeing it... Any ideas? Lets brainstorm!

Thanks for reading...

Yep, it's not really a "problem" and it's just how things work in your new car.

Get used to waiting for that pause, if you start gassing it and making it shift hard it could lead to excessive wear & tear.

We have an '05 GLI 1.8t with a tiptronic (original owners) and it too delays a second when shifting between Park and forward/reverse gears etc., not a problem.

Great. Thanks for all the feedback, I can rest a bit easier now! This is only the second car I've ever owned (not driven) haha and I was used to the gears of a '90 Camry before! I really appreciate it!!!!
