So, does this mean that, assuming that the speedometer reads 3-4 mph too fast (or 5% too fast at 60 and presumably at other speeds as well), that the odometer is similarly affected?

Ah.
Good question.
The surprising answer... No. Not as much. The
odometer reads miles correctly, or nearly so. The
speedometer is optimistic. Although they are housed in the same binnacle, modern speedos-odos are supposedly not in lockstep, as older mechanical speedometers and odometers were. This is
not your father's Oldsmobile...
Honda/Acura recently got their tail in a wringer over inaccurate
odometer readings, and outraged drivers correctly surmised they were getting cheated on warranty covarage and leasing contracts (they would only drive 57,000 miles, for instance, but their odo would show 60,000, which would be the end of a warranty period, for example), resulting in a class-action lawsuit that resulted in a slight adjustment in warranty coverage (see:
http://www.odosettlementinfo.com/Vau...2012_29_07.pdf
for more info), and as a result, many auto manufacturers crawled out of the woodwork averring their odometers were not inaccurate, thus your warranty coverage is not impacted with them. Yeah, I really believe that.
As my good friend Ronald Reaqan used to say, "Trust... but verify."
