Default Cylinder 1&2 missfire.

So, CE light came on again. Grrrrrrrr I take it to Autozone and have it checked. So dude tells me it cylinder 1 and 2 missifire. I suppose those are this codes:

16685- P0301
Cyl.1 Misfire Detected

16686- P0302
Cyl.2 Misfire Detected

What should i look for? I had coil packs replaced about 40K miles ago under recall. But plugs are probably original ones. Car has something of 60K miles on it now. Could it be plugs? Or something else? Or what should i look for, guys?

I had codes reset and drove it around. Beat on it a little. All seems fine at the moment. But i do not want any issues in the near future.

Thanks for advices.

Eugene

Check the wiring on the coil packs. A lot of people have cracked wiring and bad grounds in that area. I don't know what the cost of the harness is... And from what I heard you need to de-pin some connectors to install it. Don't know how much DIY work you have done, and the dealer will charge you a bit to do this. Mine has cracked but I'm not throwing codes yet. I'm sure there are other people in here who have thrown these codes that may have a better idea of what to check besides this.

You could have some carbon tracking inside the boot that goes over the sparkplugs. Pull your plugs and check for dark vertical lines on the insulation of the spark plugs. You cannot wipe it off. IF it's there then you'll need to replace the affected plug AND coilpack. A lot of people just replace a coil pack and never look for carbon tracking. This will ruin a new coilpack in a short amount of time.

Change the plugs, its one variable ruled out for very little money. The plugs get a fair hammering in the 1.8T and if the mileage is unknown, id change the plugs even if you figure out what the issue is.

It could be any of the things mentioned, or, it might be fuel related, if the car is modified then it could also have something to do with that.

definitely change the plugs.. i like NGK

bkr7e (or bkr7eix) if chipped .028" gap
bkr6e (or 6eix) if stock .032" gap

torque to 22 ft-lb

if the problem is still there, i would swap coilpacks between cylinders and see if the misfire follows the coilpack. if so, you found your problem (the hitachi replacement coils are the best). if not, it may be the harness or fuel related.

My neighbor has a similar problem. Can anyone help?

It will start up and idle fine when cold. After getting hot or driving 10 miles to get hot, it misifires. There is no loss of coolant or oil/water problems, so I don't suspect a head gasket.

-It started out with a P0304 - he changed the plugs
-P0304 returned - changed the coils (all 4 with the new style)
-Started getting P0300, p0302, P0303, and P0304- code kept jumping around and sometimes gets one, two or all the codes
-Later he got a Fuel Pressure code (don't know what code) so he changed the fuel filter and fuel pressure regulator - Ran fine for 20 minutes, he removed the battery for a charge and everything came back.
-I just took it to a friends house and VAG-COM is showing
16684
16688
16686 - these are the same as the P0300-P0304 codes with the scanner.

The VAG-COM showed the timing jumping from around 0 to as high as 14. I don't know if this is a symptom or cause. We disconnected the MAF and it didn't help.

After reading this thread, I'm wondering if he has a cam or crankshaft position sensor going bad or the flywheel. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
Jon
