How did chipping affect your hp and mpg? I've been considering it...What chip did you get?
Thanks.

APR. HP went up. MPG went down. Probably because I like to push the throttle more now. It's well worth every penny. Best bang for the buck, etc.

Sorry, that's about all I'll say about it. It's an old question with old answers.

$500ish chips work. They reprogram the ECU to account for boost pressure, fuel, timing, etc; they USE the existing sensors to achieve the best performance.

$20 and less don't. These are diodes, resisters put in place to attempt to trick the system into doing things it wasn't designed for and isn't prepared for. These cause the sensors to lie to try to trick the system into giving something it wouldn't normally.

Thx, it never ends tho.

A chip will theoretically increase ur MPG, mainly becuz u'll need less throttle to get going, but u'll never see it cuz u'll have ur foot to the floor 2 much.

Are different ECU reprogram vendors "better" than others?

I don't have an APR vendor near me, but do have a Revo vendor and a GIAC vendor.

I thought I read somewhere that some of them just use a GTI program and while it works, it's not 100% correct for a Beetle?

They're all basically the same, and no, they have NB specific programs.

Still looking!!

Ran across 2 in the last 6 months with all the options/color I'm looking for but had too high mileage.

Missed a "Certified Pre-Loved" one a couple weeks ago, was already sold when I called about it.

The nearest VW dealership is an hour away, so I've been waffling back and forth looking at other cars too.

RX-8's are pretty cool. Just wary of that rotary engine.

The reason I ask is, if ur planning on perf mods, get the manual tranny, it'll chip easier with better results, no matter who you use.

i would stick to one of the big names.. Unitronic, Revo, GIAC, APR

i prefer Unitronic, but i'm a little biased as i'm a unitronic dealer..

Yes, some eprom vendors are better than others, in my experience, GIAC produces the best performing software without the drivability issues that most other companies have issues with, GIAC products have always passed smog for me, for those concerned.

At this point, I'll take either :P

Prefer manual, but the wife balks every time, and doesn't seem real enthusiastic about learning to drive it either

Our last beetle was a 5-spd though.

not really he has a point if u understand how the software and hardware for computers/ecu works if you have both programs working instead of one u have the best of both worlds u are allowed to do more than just having one program trying to run everything

if you say so. But an ECU change is all software from what I can tell. Unless he's saying Giac changes the processors, registers, or accumulators; it's all software.

They add a socket (or used to) for their chip; but that's not really adding anything but an adapter to the connection.

Anyway, like I said; whatever suits ya. Giac is good stuff. APR is good stuff. REVO is good stuff even though they won't tune my APH motor. Upsolute let me down w/their negative boost deviation.

a ecu change is not all software it's part hardware and software u need both u have to have a base setup for the software to run it can't run by itself

I don't agree. I think that's obvious. I really don't think APR changes resistors, registers, math processors or any OTHER hardware when they do their "Direct Port Programming".

Maybe we should start a new topic about this rather than hijack this thread.
