Angry Secondary Air Pump

Well mine is going out..don't really want to pay 800 bucks to have the dealer fix it...considering it's only there for emissions...and where I live we don't have emissions. So I ordered a SAI Resistor and Blockoff Plate from Integrated Engineering which is basically a blockoff that goes right where the pump used to be...Anyways I was wondering how hard it is to take the pump out, and what tools I might need? Thanks!

And once you've got it out... if you might want to sell it off cheap, lemme know. I might be able to fix it up and put it in mine. My first try at fixing it didn't work, but I don't want to go the bypass route.

Taking it out should only take basic tools, metric sockets & maybe some allen sockets.

Thanks Lony and noR....Hopefully I will get those parts today and I'll be attempting the switch this weekend. noR I'll let you know when I get the pump out and I'll work something out with you if you'd still like it.

Groovy. I tried to fix mine w/epoxy... failed miserably. I'd like to try again w/nuts & bolts but mine's no longer a candidate for enhancement, the epoxy's in the way.

800 Bucks?? But then we had Aphid's replaced when they replaced the timing belt & water pump so we only had to pay for the part.

Here in metro Hot'Lanta, we have to pass an emission test, the the secondary air pump is crucial.

As for removing/disabling it...according to the letter of federal law, it is illegal to do so because it is a part of the emission control system. Also, one day you may want to sell your car to someone whose municipality requires passing the test, and an emission test failure might make selling much more difficult or impossible.

Now before anyone says it......it's also illegal to drive over the speed limit, but just about everyone does it. It's not going to affect me one way or the other, but I just think you ought'a have the correct information before you decide what to do.

Well I'm not too worried about the emissions...we don't have any here where I live...and as for if I sell it..well it's not my problem after the car is sold..(not trying to sound particularly mean)

That's the point of my post...legally it COULD be....unlikely, but it is possible. As long as you know the law and make an informed decision, I'm happy.

What the heck does the SAI do anyway? How is it so crucial to emissions? To my understanding all it does is warms up the cat. I guess that is am emissions devise.

What is the real importance?

CaptainXeroid has a really good point though. it wont hurt to just do a little research to make sure this isn't a removal that will hurt you in the future. you're lucky that you don't have emissions testing but that's very rare in most places. and from the perspective of somebody who's currently in the market to buy a beetle, i would be furious if somebody sold me one without the secondary air pump and then i'm the one who has to pay the $800. before you go through with this, i would look into possible self-fix or self-replace type of options.

It supposedly pumps oxygen into the exhaust upon startup...and that's about it

I never thought I would get so many negative views towards me taking it out...I'm not planning on selling my car anytime soon...plus I bought the resistor that goes along with it so it doesn't pull a CEL which it will still pass emissions in that sense

Lots of conservatism that's all. Sounds cool though.

you can address that with lemmiwinks or the unitronics version, or you can put a spacer into your O2 sensor I think. search around on vortex and you'll find some options.

o2 spacer will do nothing for an improper flow code for the SAI

the SAI system pumps oxygen into the exhaust at startup. the engine runs richer (ie, unburnt fuel in the exhaust) and the air causes it to burn in the exhaust manifold/downpipe. this is how it heats up the cat.

That resister will only put a stop to the CEL that will appear from unplugging the SAIP, you will still get a DTC/CEL when the ECU notices that the warm up fuel term is not with-in spec. due to the absence of the fresh air that would normally be supplied by the SAIP, short of custom tuning there is not a guaranteed way to remove these emissions without issue.

You can try to lean out the warm up fuel term with the use of the Unitronic 1.4 Unisetting ME7 tuning software but there is no absolute guarantee that this will resolve the SAIP P0411 code (Incorrect Flow Detected).

For anyone living in a state that has smog regulations similar or the same as California, I would not suggest removing the SAIP and Combi Valve because you will not likely pass smog.

FYI, if you are being quoted $800 for a Secondary Air Injection Pump then someone is the King of thieves, this part retails for about $400 OEM new and one can usually get it for less, a new SAIP and Combi Valve can be purchased at MSRP for about $620.
