Default New guy with a problem

Hey guys, I recently purchased a 2000 NB 1.8 Turbo. I have run into a few problems, the biggest of which is when I slow down to make a turn or come to a stop light the car will turn off. There is no Check engine light, and the car always cranks right up and she is on her way. Is this a common problem? Has anyone experienced this? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Ohh yeah, the car has 85k miles Thanks Again!

Hi new guy
Is it a 5 speed? Are you pushing the clutch pedal in Just kidding.
Are there any other symptoms? Once you start it up again does it idle or die out? Has the timing belt and water pump been changed? Hopefully someone here who is more of a mechanic than I will check in.

i recently had a problem similar to what you are describing. When i would slow down to make a turn or come to a stop a light my car would stall, or sometimes the engine would rev by itself trying to stop from stalling. I had a bad MAF, and once it was replaced it stopped. You might be having the same issues, and this might be what problem is.

Yes it is a 5 speed, and yes the clutch is in! Timing belt and water pump were changed before i purchased it. The car idles fine when you restart it , it will just occasionally die when you are coming to a stop...

Does anyone know how to "Test" the MAF sensor?

i don't know if a vag-com will find anything, if the check engine light isn't on. I'm sure that someone else could tell you how to test it.

The part it else is around $150, and if you has basic mechanic skills it is really easy to replace, not sure if you can just replace it or you need to do something else along with installing it.

half of that $ on eBay - pick good seller though
what's your revs when it happens?
visual check of your vacuum lines won't cost you anything either

I had that same exact issue a few years ago. Did two things at the same time, so not sure which one fixed it.

I replaced the fuel filter and the N75 valve.

Hasn't it done it since.

You can easily clean the MAF sensor and save some money. Clean the throttle body while you're at it. Replace all the filters and plugs, if they have more than 40K miles on them.

Hey my gf is having the same problem but her Beetle is automatic. There are less than 20k miles on the car. it is an '01. Should I still have the MAF checked out?

1. The T-Belt and water pump will not cause the issues that you are describing.

2. I would not suggest buying a MAF sensor anywhere except the dealer, a company that sells the factor part from a person that you feel comfortable with and rust to be honest, otherwise, you could end up with a used or no good sensor and not even know it.

3. Cleaning a MAF sensor is an easy a cheap and thing to try, however, this will have no effect if the sensor has reached the end of it's life and is not working correctly, replacement would be the only option at that point.

There are a number of possible things that might be causing your problem:

A) Fuel pump
B) Fuel filter
C) MAF sensor
D) MAF plug
E) FPR
F) Injectors
G) Spark plugs

Etc...

My 2002 (automatic) also stalls when at a light or after just starting up and putting it into drive or reverse. Sometimes it idles really rough. It has been getting worse since I bought the car in 2005. Now it is starting to chug once in a while. I will be on the highway and it will act like it is not getting any fuel and then I have to pump the pedal a couple of times to get a response. Kind of scary at 60 mph.
The repair shop replaced the MAF sensor, fuel filter, spark plugs, and did a fuel flush. Not sure what codes it has been getting but I am going to ask.
I did notice after the MAF was replaced the Turbo did not hesitate as much, but now it is getting bad.

Also I noticed when I had the passenger window open I could see a lot of fumes rising. Did not notice it on the driver’s side. Not sure if that is normal (assume not).

I am adding to the check list: n75 valve, fuel pump, fpr, injectors, fuel pressure regulator.

Any other ideas let me know.

I want her to make to Roswell next year!

Tammy

The very "first" thing I find out is what DTC's (if any) are being stored in the ECU, I note and evaluate this information before I, or anyone else is allowed to replace a single part, no exceptions.
