Default oil change

ok 2 questions:
1. will changing my own oil void my warranty?
2. royal purple or Q horsepower? or any other oil you prefer to use?

Changing your own oil will not void your warranty, unless you use the wrong kind of oil which would cause something to break as a direct cause of your oil change.

I use royal purple in everything that i can. I would cook with it if I could.

I use Mobil 1 0w-40, which is approved for VW, Audi, Porsche, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, & Chrysler.

As long as you use a quality oil that is right for your car, you'll be OK.

You're good then...

I'd stick with 5w-40 for the Florida climate, the 0w-xx synth oils are probably a bit more expensive, they won't harm anything, but they're used mostly in hybrids or in cold-weather cars, AFAIK. Our Honda Insight specifically calls for the 0w-20 oils...

I've used 5w 30 in all my Florida cars for over 17 years. My Ranger has 140k on it and runs like a top. It's had nothing but Castrol 5w 30 in it. Our last car got nothing but 5w 30 Mobil One. Probably what I'll use in the NBC unless it's spec'ed for a different weight. I was told by Ford when the Ranger was new that they don't consider Florida to be extreme duty unless you are using the vehicle like a taxi or something where it's driving in city traffic all day long.

I've always heard bad things about Fram filters. I ALWAYS use Bosch or Mahle/Mann (same as OEM). Plus, all 1.8T's are supposed to use the larger filter that came on the Passat, as per an official VW TSB: http://www.ecstuning.com/stage/edpd/...&productID=591

Change the oil already. I understand that you want to keep the car running great, but it's an oil change dude.

lol, went ahead and did it. car runs smoother(who would have thought??) but no noticable power increace. now one more question. how much of a diference will mobil 1 0W-30 or 0W-40 make to my MPG? on the bottle it says "extreme fuel economy blend"

I used a K&N for my first oil change, but switched to the larger OEM recommendation. I ordered mine from ECS as well, but it's larger (bigger circumference) than the one in the picture now. It's almost absurd how large it is.

Mobil 1 is the only way to go.

Unfortunately I don't think I can change mine myself, as I am an apartment dweller & really don't have a spot to do that. I live in LA and wonder if there's anyone local that can recommend a good spot to go? Last time I went to a Jiffy Lube and was charged $60 for an oil change. Ow.
