2003 1.8L Turbo - Towing

Hello all,

I hope someone here can offer some guidance. I just bought my Bug. I have a little (250#) trailer that I wanted to tow. All went well with the hitch install and then off down the road I went. Then the engine overheated. I disconnected the trailer, it overheated once again for just a moment, then settled down fine.

Total weight was about 500#. All fluids are new and full. Any ideas on what the issue could be? (turbo got very red the first time it overheated).

It's not the trailer. I have pulled more weight than that on a regular basis and a few times long distances. Most likely the plastic impellor on your water pump has broken apart--very common occurence.

What speeds were you towing at? And what sort of terrain?

It's not built to tow, but they typically handle small towing jobs easily. Then again, maybe your cooling system has a weak point somewhere?
