Angry 2003 Turbo Beetle?

PLEASE HELP - I am in the process of changing my PT Cruiser for this awesome turbo car, I just got it today and my friend is letting me drive it to see if I like it, LOVED IT!! everything was fine (the streets were dry)and the turbo charger makes this great sound I am becoming to get addicted to, plus the speed pushes you back.. THE BUG ROCKS , late this evening really heavy rain started and the streets were really soaked, I was able to hear some squeeks from the band I did not worried, like 5 min later the CEL (check engine light) turned on and I WAS FREAKNG OUT AND I AM SO MAD!! the bug still purrrs like a kitty and runs like on the beggining before the stupid CEL. After reading some of the threads there is an important amount of complaints of having the CEL reacting after rain or snow comes in and then the CEL turns off as if nothing happened. The car is sitting outside and I will try it tomorrow again. I need advice to know if I should buy the car or not, if yes: then how easy is to detect this failures on this cars? Thanks you for reading and advice!

Most likely enough water got on the accessory belt to cause it to slip enough so that things like the alt and power steering were not spinning at the right speed. Are the engine splash shields still on the car, importantly the one on the passenger side?

The other scenario is that some water found its way into a plug and freaked a sensor out, from the point of view of the ECU.

THE CEL IS OFF NOW!! A friend of mine is a mecanic and he told me that problem is usual on rain season, he unplugged the battery and then plug it after 20 min and the CEL went AWAY! So NBTF your theory was right!! the shields are still on but yesterday the rain was so heavy 1 person died because of lightning. Now I know I can buy the car. NBTF thank you so much for your pro advise is there a way to rate you? I will be glad to recomend you as a PRO!
