Default What RPM should I be at?

Curious, drove my "new" NB (2000)to work today, what RPM should the 5speed manual be at in 5th at ~80mph. It seemed high and I hope I don't have to shell out for a MAF or something.
It was running ~3.5-4k at 80.
Thanks,
BUB

maybe someone with a 1.8 5m can chime in with a bonafide answer, but my 2.0 6 speed auto revs that high at that speed, and from reading previous posts on here, your numbers seem just fine... aka don't sweat it!

can someone back me up on this?

Seems normal to me. I always hate that the RPM's are so high. :P but, from what i remember it is normal.

normal, and not high IMO.

you should try driving an mk2, revs 5k @ 80 mph.

A 1.8t with a 2.0 gearbox will give you 4.5k@80mph.

A MAF or anything other than a transmission/clutch problem won't cause your RPMs to be higher/lower than they should be with a manual tranny. It's a direct connection from your engine through the tranny to the wheels, so any speed will always give you the same RPM, regardless to how well the engine is running.

A slipping clutch or the wrong transmission (it has happened) would cause you to run at the incorrect RPMs.

What is the purpose of the MAF? It seems to only cause headaches and faulty Cels..

It is to help work in conjunction with the O2s and other sensors to help the engine run at the correct A/F mixture. It meters the amount of air coming through the intake. (though it is a known fact that above 5400rpm it does not report the correctly.)

I thought that the RPM's were high too when I first got Chip. I was driving an 84 crx and 80 in 5th was about 2 so it was hard to get used to.
