Default 2000 Beetle GLX Turbo - Fuse/Distribution Box Problem

Anyone seen anything like this? The area under the first fuse(30 amp) has burned all up. When looking at the top left of the pic, the very first top left big wire is getting hotter than hell when the car is running and burning up the area underneath it.

#1 Can anyone tell me what the 1st fuse(30 amp) is for ?

#2 Can anyone tell me what that first top left wire goes to ?

My A/C compressor is not kicking on and I'm wondering if this might be the problem.

I think the wire goes to a ground on the chasis, but I'm not certain.

And I don't know exactly what the fuses do, but I believe they deal with the A/C and/or the radiator coolant fans.

I still can't find what those fuses are. The 1st 30 amp fuse is all burned up underneath. I've search all over the internet and spent an hour going thru the books in the glovebox. They give a general clue what the fuses are inside the car but I can't find anything on the 3 fuses on this little power distribution box on top of the battery.

Surely somebody knows what these fuses are?

That fuse is for the A/C. My block is in the same shape and every once in a while I have to move the fuse around to get my A/C compressor to kick on.

Thank you VERY !!! much ! That's exactly what I needed to know. Time to hit the salvage yards. Do you have any idea if that distribution box is the same between the 2.0 non-turbos and the 1.8 turbos?

Default Fuse and wiring

Starting on the left hand side; here is what the Beetle Service manual calls these. First they Beetle coding assigned to each one; then the amps., and then what they goto.

The black wire is S177 and is 150 amp, it for the alternator.
Red wire # 1 is S176 and is 110 amp. and for the Vehicle electrical system.
Red wire # 2 is S164 and is a 40 amp. it for the Coolant fan two speed.
Red wire # 3 is S163 and is 50 amp this is for the Fuel pump or glow plug relay.
Red wire # 4 is S162 and is for the Secondary air injection relay or Coolant pre-heating relays.
Now for the 3 fuses and again from the left; the first one is S180 a 30 amp for the Coolant fan single speed.
The next fuse is S179 a 30 amp. it is for the ABS.
The last one is S180 a 30 amp. it is also for the ABS.
Hope this helps.
God Bless

Yeah, now that I think of it, my ABS lights come on when that fuse isn't in the right spot either. I swear, if its not in the right spot the A/C compressor wont kick on.

I have a sheet from the VW repair manual that shows what the fuses goto and where they are located.
If you would send me an e-mail with your Fax # I can fax these to you.
I tried to scan these but it came out really strange on micro soft.
