Default 2001 1.8T NB Misfire Problems

Hello.

This is my first post here so if I forget info, just tell me. I have a 2001 1.8T model bug. it has recently started have ing issues with cylinder misfires (code 300, 301, 302) and a code for fuel too lean. I have changed the spark plugs (Double platinum) and changed the 4 coil packs with ECS Tunings updated version. Prior to the misfire problems the car was running just peachy til the battery died one day and was removed for about 24hrs, not sure if that effects it or not. the car has under 118K on it, and yes i have done the timing, water pump, the whole kit-n-kaboodle at about 100K. my next step is to change fuel filter (air filter is k&n and clean as a whistle), and maybe MAF if needed. Just looking for any advice anyone here may have.

Thanks for looking.

Is the car still misfiring? If you've already swapped coils (which is what I would suspect first) and plugs, then it should be fine. Could be residual codes being stored (but it should clear out on its own).

i would get rid of the k&n it lets to much crap into your sustem. next i would look for a leak in vacuum lines use carb cleaner spray to find the leak do this wile car is idling. car running 2 lean prolly would be o2 sensor(s) or like you said fuel filter not geting enough gas and goes to say a vacuum leak could also be the problem.... hope this helps

vjc6902, if the car was running well with the existing equipment up until the battery was changed then there is no need to remove any of your upgrades, along with thoroughly inspecting all hoses and connections (especially near the battery area), I would suggest that you start by using a vagcom or Ross-Tech scan tool to printout any fault codes, then go through the fault code erase procedure even if no codes are found.

Cycle the ECU by backing out of the program then turn the ignition off for a few seconds, with a Ross-Tech, restart the program enter Select then turn the ignition on (ignition on only, do not start), enter Engine (01) followed by Measuring Blocks (08), go to the top and change the existing 001 group numbers to 060.

Now click on "Switch to Basic Settings" on the lower left and allow 30 seconds to elapse, click the lower left tab again, back out of the program then turn the ignition off, you have now correctly completed a TBA (Throttle Body Alignment).

Make sure that you do not touch the gas pedal during the above process, coolant temps. are well with-in 5 to 95 degrees Celsius, battery voltage is above 11.5V at the ECU, no fault codes in the ECU and the TB must be clean.

A TBA procedure should be performed anytime power is lost or whenever the battery is disconnected otherwise drivability issue can occur.
