Unhappy 2003 VW stopped while driving

I bought my 2003 VW Turbo Beetle in 2005 from CarMax. I love the beetle and had wanted one since they came out in 1998. MY car had only 9,000 miles on it when I purchased it..the car itself now has 107k miles (driving 53 miles one way to and from work really takes a toll). I have replaced the engine one time due to the water pump blowing as well as my head gasket. Unfortunately with my warranty, I could only get a used engine with 51k miles on it (It now has about 87K). I was driving down the road today and it felt almost like I took my foot off the gas. MY car lost speed and then pushing on the gas pedal did absolutely nothing. I drifted off to the side of the road. I tried to restart and it barely made a sound. I had just replaced the battery last year so I didn't believe it was that. I checked my fuse box and one of my #5 fuses had actually fallen out of its location and somehow managed to be held inside by another fuse. Even still once I replaced the fuse my car still made a sound when being turned over that i have NEVER heard before. I had to have it towed at least to a friends house...being as it is the weekend and i'm flat broke...I couldn't afford to take it in for work. My brother in law loves working on cars...but I'm not sure if he knows how to fix it or even what the problem is...any suggestions?

Pop off the top section of the timing belt cover (no tools needed). You may find your problem right there--if it's broken it's going to be expensive...

You haven't told us what me and everyone else that has read this is wondering.

Did you change the timing belt and waterpump at 60k like your suppose too?

My guess is probably not because you said you put an engine in it that had 51k miles.

Timing belt went. Sorry to hear that you did not have this taken care of like it should have been. The head has to come off and be repaired.

Maintain your cars people!

Its definatly not my timing belt I know that for sure. My water pump was changed with my engine. All of the coil packs have been checked, and fuses too.

It sure sounds like a timing belt. I would check it anyway to be sure.
