Default Replaced timing belt and it still doesn't start...

We just but on a new timing belt because the car stopped running due to a bad timing belt (had about 30 ribs missing).
Got it all back together but now it still won't start!
I am looking for a diagram on the belt to make sure it's on right. Plus any threads with pics or any other ideas would be great!

Did you check the valves? When I lost my timing belt I lost all my valves.

I know I didn't, but maybe the other guy helping did. Is this easy to check, how do you check?

Thanks

The 1.8T is an "interference engine"(when the crank and cam aren't timed properly there will be valve to piston contact)--you lose a TB and it's pretty much a guarantee that the head will have to come off to be sent out for repairs to the valvetrain. If you want to do a leak-down or a compression test for giggles then go ahead, but sorry, just a new belt won't solve the problem 99 out of 100 times.

Yep, keeping on top of timing belts on these cars is very important unless you like rebuilding engines.

The belt stripping would have caused the camshaft to retard its timing and the valves to strike the pistons and bend. You can prove it by a compression test - likely you have no compression hence the engine won´t start or run (or even quicker, jack up a front wheel, place the car in 5th gear and turn the engine over with the front wheel, if it is really easy then that means you have no compression to resist).

You´ll need to pull the head of to see what the damage is and have it repaired. TBH it was a waste of time putting a new belt on if 30 ribs had gone, timing damage occurs if the belt is 2 ribs out IIRC (but will run VERY poorly if even 1 rib out).

We are supposed to have a compression checked sometime this week.

I wouldn't even waste the time or money in getting a compression test. It will be exactly zero in at least 2 or more cylinders. The head needs to come off and be rebuilt as it will probably look something like this: Bent Valve Blues

Been there, still working on it ...

When you try to start it, is this all it does?

Perhaps you do have some bent valves, go ahead and do the compression test to be sure. Other than that I would not try to start the car anymore.

If you break a timing belt on a 1.8T there is going to be huge damage without any question at all. What is even being debated here? Pull the head, repair the carnage and move on.

Have to say, can't believe you made it that far on the original belt and water pump. Supposed to be changed between 60k and 80k miles (usually sooner vs later because the water pumps are highly prone to failure.
