Used to be a little box you could buy called a "tail wagger" that let you choose at what speed the spoiler went up or down.

Finding one now is usually pretty hard.

You CAN, however, raise the spoiler manually with the switch that is under the dash, but if I remember correctly, it won't stay UP because the speed control makes it go back down again? (might be wrong). But you can snip one of the wires somewhere in the mess and then the switch is the ONLY thing controlling it.

Some folks just move the switch from UNDER the dash, to somewhere within easy reach so you make it go up or down anytime you like.

Exactly what Evanrude said. The switch under the dash is the key and by cutting a little wire you can manually control it.

The other option is to swap the wing motor with one from a 2002+ NB that deploys at 45. That'll also do the trick, if you can't find a Tail Wagger, or don't want to make it manual only.

Sometimes you can even luck out and find someone with a 2002+ who wants their spoiler to deploy at 93, and just switch.

I have problems with mine i wish i could fix...It gets stuck about half way when i try to put it up or goes up, then it finnaly makes it all the way up and get completely stuck up. makes a crazy knocking grinding noise when i am drivng slow, then i have to use a screw driver nad push real hard to make it lay flat, i HATE it so i never put it up. (Which totaly sucks) If anyone could help with this problem, i would greatly appericiate it.

Yea im wondering the same thing. I wanted a tailwagger but very hard to find. I want to see if its possible to reprogram it, if its connected with the cars ECU or its separate module.

I found the mod and it involves cutting a couple wires.
The only issue I have is that it's buggy, and doesn't quite do what I want mine to do; raise at 25 MPH and close at the usual speed.

I need to see what the wing control module receives for a speed sensor input.
If it's a varying DC voltage, increasing or decreasing with speed, I can change/amplify the input to make the wing go up sooner.

If it's an AC signal I can modify that as well.

I just need a diagram to know which wires to measure, I have the electronic knowledge.

The control is in the motor it's self. I swapped an 03 motor in my old 01 and it went up at 45. It has to look at the ECU somehow but not sure how. I still have the 93MPH motor from my 01 if anyone needs one.

Those motors are on ebay all the time, by the way , the 45mph ones. So if anyone is looking, seems like a good way to go other than modding.

Default Spoiler, its working now...

I just bought my yellow concept a few months back, and knew that the spoiler did not work when I test drove it (thank you to everyone on newbeetle.org for posting their NB tricks, I read those before I test drove the car...) The salesman said "maybe the motor is just disconnected". After tearing apart the interior, I had not found a thread to say where the motor was, I discovered that the connector had "fallen off". I plugged it in, hit the extend / retract switch and voila it worked. Jumped in and off to test it while driving. At about 45-50 I heard what I thought was deployment... so I slowed down to just under 10 mph and someone threw a trash can full of junk into my back seat...I am fairly certain that the car lot people disconnected it on purpose. I still get a kick out of people jumping when the spoiler retracts with them in the car for the first time... hehe...

If you have never seen the motor is is located inside the "trunk lid" above the glass. you have to remove the interior trim to see it. It is a motor that turns a large nylon gear that in turn pushes two nylon "push rods" that ride inside of metal tubes. I am guessing that the noise you hear is the motor or the large gear slipping because the push rods or the spoiler itself is bound up. probably time to get a new motor and / or lubricate the spoiler hinges. Some people spray a lubricant into the metal tubes to lubricate the push rods but I worry about dirt collected by the lube in the tube causing more problems...hehe...lube in the tube...hehe
