Default Turbine life span

Hey guys. I tried searching for this info, but the forum search engine turned up 152 posts to comb through, so I decided to ask directly.

How long does the turbine last in these engines? Not the engine as a whole, but the just the turbine.

Also, a lot of these I find for sale are around 90k OR 120k- 140k. I know the water pups can go around 90K, but what else can happen around the 120k - 140k mileage range?

Thanks!

By that, are you talking about damage or the installation of a chip to add hp?

generally you can expect 100K+ from the stock turbo.

Chipped or not.

Manual boost controllers are a different story all together.

I am looking at an 87K bug with a turbo, what could you expect to happen when the turn craps out? I mean can the car run without it?

If you can't afford to fix it if it breaks, don't buy it.

Did anyone say anything about affording? Why be a prick? I know for me, affording isn't an issue, it's a matter of dealing with it if it goes out. So don't be a prick and maybe think a bit before you say something.

The wife's '00T is original and I have not had a problem with it (knocks on wood) and she has 150k+ on hers.

Yes but badly. The engine runs off-boost a lot of the time anyway but you will know the difference. Some failures are the oid seals in which case you'll leave a smog trail and likely get pulled for emissions anyway (depending on where you live).

If the car runs good when you get it then prepare for water pump/timing belt and other routine maintenance, turbo failure isn't so predictable as it depends on oil, frequency of oil changes, usage and whether it has been shut off hot many times...

I know your new here. So let me give you a word of advice. Take whatever is said with a grain of salt. Is it really worth getting worked up over a simple statement. Don't go calling people derogatory names. You will find a lot of useful information her, as well as some BS. If you think it's BS, then it probably is. Just ignore it, and let it go. Like you said, think before you say something,.....is it really worth it?

Site Rules - NewBeetle.org And I'll just direct your attention to Rule #9 here.

Seemed like he left you good advice to me. I can't tell you how many people I see complaining about financial problems here.

Anyway, it'll run, it'll run poorly. You'd probably be leaking oil like crazy, maybe even trying to push oil through the intake manifold. But who knows. There's umpteen different ways a turbo could die, from seals becomming non-existant, to a shaft bending and the turbine locking up.

Or maybe pieces of vanes breaking off sending shrapnal to the intercooler.

How about a more specific question... Maybe a new thread asking if anyone has actually had their turbo fail on them. Then you can ask them for first-hand information, maybe we'll get a correlation going.

I wasn't trying to be a prick, honestly. I just dislike when people buy these cars then complain, or can't fix them because of money.
