Cool 2002 vw beetle glx 1.8 turbo...

So i just bought a '02 Beetle GLX 1.8 Turbo with 91k on it. I haven't even had it a month and the MAF sensor went out. I took it to a mechanic and quoted me $300. WHOA! So I replaced it, hopefully I wont have to deal with that again. It just bums me out that I havent even had it a month and it already messed up. I dont really know much about VW's this is the first one I've owned. Can anyone tell me about my year model...like stuff that I should know??? Anything useful.. THanks.

i'm an owner of a 2000 GLS 1.8t- welcome

You've started on one of the biggest keys to knowing more about your nB... You're here. I strongly suggest that you keep posting here- the knowledge that has been dispensed here and continues to do so, is valuable.

Now @ 91,000 miles if you haven't had the timing belt/water pump/tensioner/roller replaced, do now! Our engines are interferrance engines and if your timing belt goes out, vales will bend= no good. Head and valve repair/replacement is a good 1000.00 for starters. ECS tuning sells the TB/WP/Tens kits for a couple hundred bucks.

If you're not running synthetic oil, i highly reccomend it.

As far as stuff that goes wrong... umm... the MAF is a big one. Water Pump is the most crucial. Start planning to do this now if it hasn't been done already... they have plastic impellers that are very susceptible to failure (i speak from recent, personal experience).

The N75 valve on the turbos can be an issues, but another turbo guru can chime in on that one...

window regulators on some models, although VW extended the warranty on these.

I think that is about it as far as widespread stuff that might affect your model and year.

lots of cool tricks though. the most notable is that you can roll the windows up and down with the key in the drivers door. turn it to the right and hold it--windows go up. hold it to the left--windows go down! magic!
