Default Slug off the line

Hello,

My '01 Beetle was recently in the shop for ignition coil replacement. This was a recall. After driving off from the dealer, it was apparent that something was not right with the car. After coming to a stop and then accelerating away, I figured out the car was not starting in 1st gear. More like 3rd gear. I called the dealer and they said they didn't do anything to cause this.

The car didn't have this problem prior to taking it in for service.

Does anyone have any ideas that might resolve this problem?
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Shemp

It's an automatic. I manually shift down to first and it runs normal in first. I go back to "D" and, from a stop it's in 3rd or high gear right off the bat. I am searching for a fuse or something that could be the cause.

Fuse? Not likely... I know little about the automatics, but I do remember reading something about a transmission control module?

Fail-safe mode is check engine light. Which you loose HP with a check engine light on. Is a orange light lit up ?
