Turbo upgrade questions...

This one might be worth stickying...I've been going thru the archives and haven't found what I was looking for...

I'm strongly considering a turbo upgrade over the course of this summer. It's my understanding that before doing so, I should definately upgrade to a 3" turbo back exhaust(suggestions on brand would be appreciated)and getting a performance chip (Unitronics looks to b the best bet, from what I'm hearing) and that the K04 is just a tiny upgrade, and not really worth blowing money on for the HP range I'm considering eventually shooting for.

My end-game goal is somewhere shy of the 300hp range. So here are my questions:

1. I've heard great things about the GT28RS. Is it a good choice for a 1.8T, and capable of getting me to where I wanna be, HP-wise? Or are other turbos a better choice?

2. Should I also be looking into replacing any other engine parts besides the injectors/fuel rail? (Intake manifold especially) and can the internals on a 1.8T AWV hold that kind of horsepower/the boost needed to hit that HP?

3. What size fuel injectors are my best bet?

4. If I'm searching on VWVortex, will any turbo that fits a 1.8T Golf/GTI/Jetta also fit my car?

5. I understand the easiest choice intercooler-wise is a SMIC. Any suggestions on what I should be looking for there?

6. Can the stock clutch system handle this much HP under routine daily driving? My clutch only has about 35k miles on it, was hoping to not need to replace it too soon...

7. If I'm looking to change the turbo system, should I wait on chipping it till after, or does it really not matter too much?


I'm sure more questions will be coming, but I'm starting to save the money now, and just get a better understanding of the work/parts that go into a turbo upgrade. I tried to just scroll through the archives, not much luck. Thanks again guys!
