Default 2002 VW Beetle Turbo S Engine Size

What is the easiest way to determine the size engine a 2002 Turbo S Beetle has in it? From what I understand the local garage says the timing belt broke and it is an interference engine. They have not done anything to the vehicle because they said it is an interference engine. As a result, the did not do anything to the vehicle and I was able to acquire the car for VERY little, since they say the engine must be replaced. What are the odds a piston is busted? My plans are to pull the head and look.

The Turbo S had the AWP 1.8T engine code in it. Wrong forum, but a mod will surely move this to the right place.

Default Thanks for the help and the direction

I will jump over to the 1.8 forum.

D2Beetle...I especially appreciate the thread. Interesting reading and encouraging. I am going to get it on Monday and will start tinkering after that. I will probably get my hands on a Bentley pub as I don't have anything repair manuals on this vehicle yet. Is Bentley the best source?

Default Couple more questions...now that you have my curiosity

Toad and Audiophil,

Toad - you mentioned a VR...what is that?

Audiophil...you mentioned mods? Are the 1.8 and 2.0 the same engine (block and head)?

If I am going to tinker...I need to think about what to tinker on (fix or upgrade).

Thanks!

VR6 - VW's 6 cylinder, read this thread.

No they are not the same; the 1.8 is a 20 valve DOHC turbo producing 150-180 hp and the 2.0 is an 8 valve SOHC producing a 115 hp.
