Nice NB, wish I had one. ![]() Should the OP decide to do their own head gasket work, perhaps this thread will give them some idea of what will be involved...

Ok, Work begins...
Has anyone ever had what looks like aluminum flakes in the coolant? This is what the drain pan looks like after draining and flushing. It did have green Prestone Antifreeze as coolant when I purchased the car. K ![]() |

Bad News... Its a headgasket fix or block fix that the previous owner put into the coolant. And must not have done a good job at flushing the rest out. The previous owner had a problem with it. Just hope its a head gasket. I have used this stuff in the past and it totally fixed all problems for 20,000miles. |

Ohh, stop leak…I didn’t think of that, I was thinking metal flakes from the head or water pump… that actually makes me feel a little better.
As stated earlier I purchased this car with a lot of issues, leaking water pump was another, probably added stop leak to try and fix. Thanks everyone ![]() K |

I wonder if the engine experienced overheating at some point in time and developed a coolant leak. The previous owner then used "Stop Leak" as an easy/cheap solution... thus the metallic dust.
A good mechanic should be able to tell you if it's the rings or valves that's causing the low compression. Btw, you can have the oil analyzed to see if coolant shows up. Good luck! |

Well here’s a quick update…
I got the cylinder head pulled off today and as suspected the head gasket is bad / blown between cylinders one and two, unfortunately the exhaust manifold is also cracked. I will need to get it all cleaned up and see if I find any thing else. I will take the cylinder head down and have the local machine shop pressure check it for leaks / cracks. Next question is there and easy way to check the turbo? I might as well pull it while I am this far… ![]() K |

If your turbo is leaking there should be oily evidence around the seal and/or hose connections; unless it is dumping it all into the inter-cooler.
Which exhaust ports are cracked? How about a pic? |
