Default DP Sound

I am thinking about getting a 2 1/2" or 3" DP but do not want the full exhaust. I like the quite sound. Does anyone have just the DP? If so does anyone have a sound clip of just the DP?

Well, I have never run just a different downpipe on any car, but I doubt there would be much, if any change in sound level if you keep a converter on it. The main things that muffle the sound on the car is the turbo, the cat, and the mufflers. Pipe size has some effect, but I think atleast some portion of it has to do with the size of the pipe running through the muffler, and how big the pipe is after the muffler.
For what you are talking about, the only thing you are really changing is the size of your converter, which I doubt would make much of any difference in sound level.

I had my 2.5" downpipe with the stock cat-back before I went with the rest of the exhaust. The sound was about the same compared to stock, but with a lot more turbo whine. There was a definite power increase with the 2.5" DP.

I would look into replacing the center resonator with a straight pipe. It won't really increase the exhaust note anymore, but will help the turbo spool and make a little more power for very little effort, especially if the DP goes in at the same time.

Also, look into Milltek exhausts. They're VERY quiet at everything but WOT and will net you the full gains of a 2.5" turbo-back system if coupled with a 2.5" DP. They don't make a Beetle specific exhaust, but the one for an GTI will work if it had the tips that go under the valance. Even so, an exhaust shop can modify the tips for you.

IM running 3 in dp no cat and 2.5" techtonics cat back and its got a really mean rumble at idle but when you get on it watch out because its pretty loud. Not fat can honda civic loud but mean big exhaust loud. You can hear the turbo alot more as well, plus i have a real cold air intake so that helps with the spool as well. Only negative to it is i have a cell but i had a cell anyways because i had a exhaust leak in my high flow cat so i just decided to ditch the cat all together. Is there any performance i have no idea but it sounds alot better and the turbo does spool faster. I hope this helps.
