Nice and clean, what did you use? Are the cylinder walls smooth? It almost (could be a reflection) looks like they have scratches/pits.

That's incredible that the plastic impeller is still one piece after 137k miles.

Are you going to drop the engine and tear into the block?

Exclamation cylinder head

The NB has been resting for about two months now.
The machine shop played around with the cylinder head for about three weeks, only to find out that there was more problems than initially diagnosed.
He told me that he was going to pressure test, leak test, and cut the head flat, and that I would need a gasket shim to make up the difference.
Before he got a chance to cut the head he called me and said he could see light in the valves and that I need a valve job costing $775.00 dollars.
So what was only $135.00 dollars turned in to $775.00 dollars.
I told the machinist never mind I'd pay him for the test that he did, he charged me $45.00 and I took my cylinder head.

Yes, I to had surprises when I sent mine in to be rebuilt; one call and the price doubled from the original quote.

So what are you going to do now?

D2Beetle seems we are both at the same problem with the cylinder
head.
How bad is your cylinder head?

Nice pics on the replacement head; mine is still at the machine shop waiting on parts as my repair budget is tapped out.

The final tally ...

If you happen to have a very large caliber hand gun it may come in handy. The timing belt, which wagenwerks told me looked like new 5,000 miles ago) went. So I am looking at $2,800-$3,200 depending on how bad the engine rebuild kit needs to be. It sounds like the Ghost of Al past has come to visit me.

So looks like this car went with the original factory water pump and timing belt for 137k miles...hhmm? interesting.I thought mine water pump/belt parts looked still good when my mechanic replaced them at 80k miles.

If the job was done at the dealer, a plastic impeller pump could have been put in. I rarely hear of the original pumps lasting that long, but its possible.
