I have a customer with a 2000 Turbo 1.8 beetle and he wants to get some performance items. What in the way of intake and other beginning items do you suggest. I have looked all over and can't seem to find a nice intake set up for him...Thanks!!

Well an intake will give you about 5hp at best. There not even worth it imo. I would do a drop in filter. Chip it and depending on the year they will get 55+hp increase or 30+hp. I would beat its a 150hp 1.8t motor, so with a chip you would be getting the 55+hp increase.

Down pipe is another big power gainer on the 1.8t.

Running a good full synthetic 5W-30 engine oil is a plus, a good 2.5" turbo-back exhaust and a performance chip will make a reasonable difference.

It really depends on what kind of power gains your customer wants and how much money he/she is willing to spend.

Every car is different but you may see as much as a 40hp-65hp gain from all of the above along with a nice increase in torque.

Do NOT use 5w30! I used that and within 20 miles, my car developed lifter tick....

Stick with the 0w40 or 5w40 FULL SYNTHETIC that Vw Recommends

The viscosity 5W-30 has nothing to do with lifter noise or any other failure, the issue you encountered is coincidental and is the result of some other anomaly.

I have been doing research and working on these cars for over ten years, I do not profess to know everything about them but I do know that 5W-30 or 5W-40 are fine and neither viscosity in and of itself will result in any mechanical failure or problem, I have used both for many years in both of my Volkswagens with absolutely no issue..

FYI, 5W-30 is recommended by Volkswagen and Audi, geographical location (temperature) also plays a large part in what viscosity is required.

I have to agree here...

As for what chip to buy there is only 1 that I would consider and it is sold through Eurodyne.ca

reputable chip companies:
APR (APR - High Performance Development for Audi, VW and Porsche Vehicles.)
GIAC (www.giacusa.com)
Revo (Revo)

These are the American brands that work on stock systems w/no error codes. They change the parameters of the system, they do not try to trick the system (like some diode).

autotech.com is a nice aftermarket tuning co. There are many many others as well.

Good luck

For later model Beetles there are more choices for competent tuners, however, when it comes to the 2000 Beetle with the 1.8t APH engine, the choices for quality performance software are few.

This engines ECU is a difficult one to tune and the tuners with the most experience in this realm are GIAC and Neuspeed, these two top the list for software eproms for daily drivability and engine safety without the aggravation of fault codes, CEL's and other annoying byproducts yielded by those improperly developed software chips, of the two the GIAC chip will give the most in power gains.

Check out goAPR.com or ECStuning.com.

Both have top notch stuff and pricey. There are other companies stated above.
