We’re looking to get a code reader for our 2001 1.8t.
I’ve been reading on here about several brands such a VAG COM and V checker. I want to get a good reader but I’d like to be able to reset my ECU without having to go to the dealer to have it reset. I’ve read threads here on how to do this but I’m having trouble finding them again. So I guess my question is, what be a good brand and I know most makers offer several models so what would be a good model? I don’t want to spend more than I have to but don’t want to go out and buy one only to find out it won’t do what I need it to.

Some of it also depends on what you want to do.
Just reading and clearing codes? You can get away with something like Vchecker. If you are going to want to monitor systems and tinker with your car's settings, VAG-COM is the only way to go.

I've never heard of having to reprogram the ECU after unplugging the battery. If you have the factory radio, you'll need to enter a 4 digit code to get out of the SAFE mode it gets thrown into but you should be fine otherwise.

Uh-oh, what's this about a four digit code for the factory radio? I recently had some work done and I'm sure they disconnected the battery. I don't know that they put in a code when reconnecting. Where do you find that code?

It is a four digit code that can be found in the owners manual audio section; however if your NB still has the original radio, it will work as expected and not go into SAFE Mode when you reconnect the battery.
