Hey guys, I have a 2000 Beetle and the red oil light indicator started flashing today when stopped at idle. At higher RPMs the light goes away. The oil level is good.
This car also has the blue water temp light that's on most of the time. This car previously had an engine swap so I was pretty sure the temp sensor was just faulty.
Is there really a possibility that the oil pump can fail? Is it a mechanical pump? (I'm guessing it is)
Is this just another sensor?
I'm willing to go in and replace the required sensors myself if I can get to them. What sensors do you recommend I replace?
the coolant light staying blue is most definately the coolant temp sensor. the oil light on the other hand, i recommend at least dropping the oil pan...
The pickup on the oil pump might be getting clogged and that's no good. (those sensors rarely go bad)
I've seen many cases on here where the coolant temp sensor is the cause of both. Replace and see what happens. No clue why those two are connected, but they seem to have been at times.
Well, if the computer still thinks the engine is cold, when the oil warms up and drops to warm running pressure, i can see it possibly throwing the light if the car doesn't know the oil is warm.
After you replace the coolant temp sensor, if it's still doing it, dig deeper asap. A too low or too high oil pressure can ruin an engine quickly.
Change the temp sensor. If you still have the flickering oil light then ask a shop to test the actual oil pressure with a proper capillary gauge to make sure the oil pressure is good. If it is then change the oil pressure sender.
The oil pressure sender and its light are driven solely by the electrics, the ECU can´t throw a code etc for it, if the sender says pressure is low the light comes on, if it says pressure is ok it goes off, real simple circuit.
