1.8 turbo auto trans

just wondering, ive heard that the auto trans have a very short life. is this because the trannys are suppose to be maintenance free and really they are not? would dropping the pan and changing the filter say every 50,000km and cleaning out the gunge and metal shavings and new oil prolong it? is there anyone with any thoughts or experiences on this? thanks in advance.

Red Rider has an auto and hes been hammering on it pretty good, but hes only got like 10,000 miles on the car.
And yes, I wouldnt doubt that VWs recommended service intervals of NEVER lead to some problems, but their trannies were never really all that good when they recommended normal intervals anyhow.
Im about to see how one that never gets serviced holds up. Mines got 116K on it, and I doubt the previous owner ever had it serviced. 3" exhaust, front mount intercooler and a chip are going in very very soon.

2000 auto w/ mods here and all seems good. im at 46k+ and wanted to do a tranny flush at 45k.

This is my setup on my 2000 APH engine auto:

GIAC chip (1 bar)
2.5" turbo-back exhaust (techtonics tuning)
Custom CAI

Pretty standard power mods. My car has been dealing with the power well. I am going to get the tranny serviced this spring by a reputable independent VW mechanic (Tyrolsport) as general maintenance.

The 4-speed 01M auto tranny is said to be able to handle 300 ft/lbs of torque. As long as you don't plan on slapping a huge turbo onto your engine you should be fine.

Uh oh..........
I never considered the 60 trim T3 or a 46-50 trim T4 to be that huge of a turbo, but considering that poor excuse for one they stuck on the car from the factory I guess everything is relative..
