just wondering, ive heard that the auto trans have a very short life. is this because the trannys are suppose to be maintenance free and really they are not? would dropping the pan and changing the filter say every 50,000km and cleaning out the gunge and metal shavings and new oil prolong it? is there anyone with any thoughts or experiences on this? thanks in advance.

2000 auto w/ mods here and all seems good. im at 46k+ and wanted to do a tranny flush at 45k.

This is my setup on my 2000 APH engine auto:
GIAC chip (1 bar) 2.5" turbo-back exhaust (techtonics tuning) Custom CAI Pretty standard power mods. My car has been dealing with the power well. I am going to get the tranny serviced this spring by a reputable independent VW mechanic (Tyrolsport) as general maintenance. The 4-speed 01M auto tranny is said to be able to handle 300 ft/lbs of torque. As long as you don't plan on slapping a huge turbo onto your engine you should be fine.
