auxiliary water pump

Does the auxiliary water pump run every time the engine is shut off, or just at certain temps? Any way to test it?

I believe my wife's runs every time. I recently replaced it due to a leaking O ring.

I just jumped 12V to the aux pump and it works. I have never heard it run though. What sensor turns it on?
