I believe I am giving up on my 01 GLX Turbo. I love this car. Love driving it. But after replacing everything but the VW symbol, I cannot find the reason or fix the intermittent sputtering problem when accelerating at highway speed.

Anyone have any idea of the value of the car. No pimping much, except tinted windows. Always garaged and maintained. I would really love for someone to get it that would continue to the chase...

I am gonna miss this car!

What all have you done? Also, you have a shop over by you that works on VWs specifically (Everything VW in Winston).

Timing belt job been done? That will factor in on the price if not.

I'm sorry you are having car problems with your baby Not sure of the value but you shouldn't have any trouble selling her, People are looking for smaller cars because of the price of gas. Good luck!!!

My suggestion would be to look at Kelley Blue Book or NADA, add in your options and see what it gives you. Also depends on how you are looking to get rid of it, trade in at a dealer will be less that what an individual sell will be.

For a 5 speed with 17 inch alloy wheels; $3,800 to $5,600 in my area.

Default Replaced...

No timing belt replacement yet, but I have had it checked very recently, during the inception of trying to find out and fix...

I have replaced:
MAF - I think the car is on the 5th one - I bought it used with 22,000 miles on it...and it has 89,000 now...
Intercooler
Turbo pressure switch
fuel pump
fuel filter
coil packs
dipstick extension

This car has the Tailwagger on it to make the spoiler deploy when you want it to.

I should have used the VW specialist to start with I guess... maybe I would not be having this conversation now.

I commute about 40 miles to work, each way, and need a gas mileage conscious car without looking like a tree hugger... I like the Civic and the Altima, but have not made any decisions.

Found a Mazda RX8 tonight, but I am scared to death of the rotary engine...

In my area you would get $3,000 to $3500 for it.

I have the same year Bettle as you, even the same equipment, except mine is red, and has 119,000 miles on it. Mine had 99,000 when I bought it (traded even actually, had a '92 Corvette). Mine was spitting and sputtering at highway speeds too, very annoying. Did it a bit in town when I would step on it sometimes. My mechanic, not the dealer, suggested cleaning the intake manifold, throttle body, and injectors. $215 later the car ran like it was new. They removed all these items to clean them. Best money I've spent so far. It's worth taking it to someone who knows what they are doing.

C4 (, POS) to an NBT, I'd call that trading up, not even!

Talking I have a buyer

I find out tomorrow if the buyer has the cash or not. Its sad to see her go but I am ready to close my VW Beetle chapter. I hope the 2012's are better built with better parts - because all this knowledge in these forums would have to relearn the nuances of the next generation.

Thanks to everyone for all the help and support over the years. Your experience and intuition have given me an immeasurable amount of support and assistance!

I bought the Corvette thinking it would be cool to drive, and own one, but most of the time it sat in the driveway, covered of course. I very seldom ever drove it.

I agree, the Beetle has been much more fun than the Corvette ever thought of being.

I don't know why so many people have MAF problems. I have 160k miles on my Beetle and never yet had any issues with the MAF.
Fun little car and knock on wood besides the timing belt kit, brakes and a muffler nothing has gone wrong with this car. Well the VW emblem fadded and I replaced them.

Did you check all the vacuum connections? Did you ever hook it up to a Vag Com? Did you check and or change your Spark plugs? I woulnd't give up on the Beetle yet. Just take it to someone that actually knows about those cars. The 1.8T is an excellent engine with great potential. After having mine REVO tuned that thing just became more alive than ever. I eat Corvettes for breakfast Okay, maybe not but it is still one of the more fun cars I have ever owned.

Default Give up?

I never give up - but I know when to quit taking kicks in the stomach (or wallet in this case)...

Did you check all the vacuum connections? Yes - and replaced all hoses.

Did you ever hook it up to a Vag Com? Yes - more than once at my best mechanics shop. And two other times at other mechanic's shops.

Did you check and or change your Spark plugs? Yes, plugs, wires, ignition coils, turbo pressure switch, fuel filter, fuel pump checked - working perfectly... New MAF, original OEM (that was my 5th in the life of the car in my hands....

I woulnd't give up on the Beetle yet. Just take it to someone that actually knows about those cars
. Apparently - you got the only NB that was made for Dr. Porsche and it did not have all the cheap parts on it. I too love this car and its a kick in the pants to drive... but I am turning away and moving on... its time for me to grow up - again... dammit!

Thanks to everyone who helped, coached and egged me on with this car. I love this forum and these people - you have grown to be like family and I will always recommend this forum to other NB owners, as its the best resource for anything New Beetle.

I will probably still lurk and if anyone wants to hit me up - I am heeeheee@gmail.com

Peace!

Adam

Damn, I wish I could get my hands on your beetle. I love a good challenge. I owned 2 Audi TT's with the 1.8T and one of them drove me totally bonkers as well until I found out that the little elbow hose coming from the Turbo got heat soaked and slipped partially off and caused all my problems. Those engines are very particular and when they run they run well but they can be quirky at times.
The second Audi TT never gave me any grief either and ran absolutely GREAT and this Beetle I have is absolutely a joy to drive. I get more looks and comments from people with this Beetle than I ever got with my Audi TT.

Where are you located? I may come up or down and take a look at your troubles. Maybe you just need a fresh set of eyes and a new perspective. If you didn't have the timing belt done yet it is about time. A possibilty is that perhaps the timing belt has slipped a tiny bit and is causing your issues. Or the ECM is faulty. But I figure a complete scan of the VAG Com would have revealed such major issues.

Good Luck and I hope you will find happiness with your next car. But where would be the fun in that if you can't tinker with it. Oh, If I were you don't get an RX8 ever! Those things are more trouble than they are worth. I owned an RX7 and that thing was nothing but a money pit and a friend of mine has an RX8. If you think you have troubles now and get an RX8 you wish you would have kept the Beetle. If you must go Rice go Nissan. Best made cars out there. The New Maxima is a dream to drive. (I rented one in California while on business and it was a fantastic car.) Great looks and pretty fast for a 6cyl Sedan. My wife has an 2010 Altima and it's a great car. It is pretty peppy for a 2.5 4 Cyl but it isn't as much fun to drive than my Beetle. Thank God she can't drive a stick or she would have taken that Beelte away from me by now.

I still don't see diverter valve in the items changed. That is a known problem, and surprised that your techs didn't change it out. The old design looses boost pressure, and gives the symptoms described. Replace with the updated part number, and things work fine. Cheap, and easy, too!

Not sure if the divertervalve would cause sputtering. Mine went out and I noticed a drop in boost and a honking sound like a duck call or something. Car still drove fine just didn't have much power. But, yes, it is worth checking at least. Seems he really is over the Beetle and is looking for a new toy. I can understand that. Wish I had the money to buy his beetle. I bet I could make her sing. :-)
