And yes, it is suppose to add additional structual support since you don't have a roof. But it is also a pain in the royal butt to take off all the time during an oil change.

I have an '04 NBC, and I guess, the skid plate you've pictured. I've never even removed mine. I just reach through one of the spaces and twist off the filter with my hand only. It really couldn't be any easier.
There's no need to ever remove the skid plate on my car.
