Hi, I am sorry...I thought I had listed where I am from.. I am in Pleasant Garden, NC just outside Greensboro, NC. I have had a few people tell me that it might be the security system, but as I understand this model would start and immediately shutdown. Had a VW mechanic say the starter should have given warning that it was having problems...I wish I had a lift...lol...would help.

Yup, I hate when the starter doesn't send you a text prior to going out or at least make some audible noises. But it is quite possible that starters go out without any warning.
A lift won't do you much good unless you use it to swap out the starter Just from looking at it you can't tell if it is good or bad. It's most likely the voltage regulator that went out. You could take the starter off the car and have it tested. That way you can be certain prior to spending money on a new one.

Good Luck! If I were closer to NC I would come and help you.

Hey, does this car have a starter relay? Where would it be if there is one? Larry

Never heard of one. It has a solenoid that is connected to the starter. If the solenoid is bad the starter won't function. Why not start with the most logical items first. Starter or ignition switch.

Who did you take the car to before? More out of curiosity...not sure of any shops in G-boro area really. I know of a good one in Winston though.

They are listed differently on parts sites. I imagine there is a difference.

Yup, there is a difference between the Automatic transmission and the manual transmission starter:

Here is a rebuilt BOSCH unit from ECS tuning for the manual transmission.

Volkswagen New Beetle 1.8T > Search > Starter > ES#263742 Re-Manufactured Starter Motor - SR0425XKT

Here is one for a little over 70 bucks.

http://www.primechoiceautoparts.com/...1429-mmy-.aspx

It says 1.8L except turbocharged engine S. Since all 1.8L engines are turbocharged I think they are trying to say except Turbo S models. Or it is simply a missprint.

I just dealt with my fiance's beetle not wanting to turn over. We were on the way out to eat and it just died at the light. Like you I didn't want to spend any unwanted money or take it to the dealer.

I check every relay and fuse, the fuel pump was running, tested the alternator and battery. All I didn't check was the starter and ignition switch. I ended up buying the crank position sensor and swapped it out.

Cranked over instantly.

The symptom I had were that it abruptly died at a red light. Wouldn't start up after that. Wouldn't take a jump. Had to get it towed to the house and went from there.

Hope you get it fixed soon!

While reading thru this thread, I noticed a couple of comments about the Voltage Regulator being on the starter? When did VW "start" doing that??

As suggested, check all the wiring connections at the battery, including those on the starter......loosen and re-tighten each connection. If it is a plug-on connection, unplug and re-plug!

As suggested, check the clutch switch function also. If it doesn't work, during the start position on the ignition there will not be any "current" to the solonoid at the starter....I think that wire is a plug-on. You need help and use of a multimeter to check the voltage at the solonoid with the clutch depressed and ignition in the start position to do that.

I'm not sure whether or not your vehicle has the immobilizer(forgot the title of this Thread and info since I began reading and typing). But, if it does, there could be an issue with it.

I cannot believe that a sensor such as the Crankshaft Position Sensor would keep the starter from turning the engine over.

Hope this helps!
