Car: 2001 VW beetle GLS 1.8t
Default overboost issue

Hello, I am new in the turbo vw world here and need to try and figure out why my 2001 beetle is overboosting putting it into limp mode. The car is 100% stock to my knowledge. I do not have a boost gauge so I do not know how much boost it actually spikes to before going into limp mode. I did take it to a dealership where i got the dv replaced and they they guessed that it might be the wastegate. I have had to drive this car the way it is but I am not able to get any boost until I get my scanner and clear the codes in the computer.

From what I have read the usual cause for the over boosting is the n75 valve or the boost pressure control valve. Is there a way to test that or do I just have to put a new one in. Any ideas and how to perform the worm would be great. Thanks

If you don't have a boost gauge, what makes you think you are over-boosting?

So I assume that means you are getting a code. What code is it?

You could hit limp mode due to other conditions not just overboosting which is hard to believe on a stock Beetle.
Did you check for vacuum leaks? Perhaps the hose coming off the turbo slipped off. that happened to me on my Audi TT 1.8 and back then I had no clue about those cars and foolishly took it to the dealer. They couldn't figure it out either and kept my car for over 6 days. Then they finally found the elbow hose slipped off the Turbo. They ended up charging me 800 dollars for a 50 dollar hose which included their cluelessness in trying to diagnose it. Never again! I learned really quick after that fiasco.

Take the plastic engine cover off and check all the hoses. Then check the Tubro Inlet hose and make sure it is connected the way it should. Double check the connections of the Diverter Valve and make sure everthing is tight.
I doubt it is the N75 valve but if you need one I have an extra one that I would be willing to sell for very little compared to what the dealer will charge you.

If you want to clear the codes and reset the ECU without a scanner you can disconnect the battery (both positive and negative leads) and touch both leads together for a few seconds. Then reconnect your battery. Your ECU is now reset and all the codes should be cleared. Warning if you have a VW radio you may need to re-enter the Radio Code. So have it handy just in case.

Good Luck and keep us posted.
