Default ding,ding,ding noise

i have a 2000 vw beetle turbo 1.8 ...

ok so i get in the car today. get on the highway. then i start to hear a ding, ding, ding noise. like if the door were open when the lights are on or something. so i thought well maybe the door isnt shut all the way. so i tried that. that wasnt it. no lights on the dashboard are coming on. anyone know what the cause could be?

When you say no lights are coming on, does that include the gas light? If its low on gas and the bulb is out, it could be dinging without the visual of the light!

I would also check your oil. Our Beetle does that 2-3 times when starting and stops. But,the red oil light flashes too. Maybe a bulb in the dash is burnt out.

ALWAYS a good Idea to check the oil frequently. I check mine once a week if I am just doing casual driving (100 miles or less), and before during and after any extended driving.

Could be just an electrical gremlin, but then again. Id say check all the fluids, but some gas in it and see if that stops it. If not then we will do some further investigation, but for now lets start with the easiest and work forward!!

When you start the car can you see the check engine light, and other lights come on temporarily? If so we at least know the bulbs are good. How about dash lights when you turn the lights on? But like I said make sure all fluids are good to go...

I have weekly ritual of checking the oil in all my cars. I do our Grand Cherokees alot as they are our dailies and check the Bugs when we drive it as we aren't using it allot this winter. I even check my Cub cadets before every use..Can never check them enough and for all it takes,It's worth the 30 seconds..

Also just making sure you didnt have anything too heavy in the passenger seat. If it thinks someone is sitting in it and their seat belt isn't buckled it makes that dumb beep for 5 minutes.

Well If it comes back let us know and we will get to the bottom of it. IF not then It wouldn't be the first time a beetle had a little electrical ghost

I didn't read the whole thread ... but, my 2003.5 was doing that a few months ago. Turned out that if I slammed the door while it was dinging (while I was stopped of course), the dinging would stop for a short period of time. No lights ever came on either. My GUESS is that it is the door latch. That is what mine was. The lights on the door were also on at times. So was the rear view mirror light. Rather irritating....

ok the car is making the ding ding ding noise again. i start the car, then the noise goes off like as if im leaving without shutting my lights off or something. this time , no headlights are on-meaning cuz it is daytime so i didnt turn them on).. , my seatbelt is on. doors are closed. why is it making noises like i didnt do something right or it is warning me to do something?>? like the other day the interior lights came on . what for? what could cause this? it went away before, now it is starting to make the noise again for the past 3 days that i have been driving the car. it seemed to not go away or not for a few minutes at least. im bringing it to my mechanic on thursday to get some stuff done and will ask them but hope it wont be something i gotta pay a lot to fix cuz man .. ugh.. im on a tight budget.. i did a few months ago fix the driver's side door latch that did fix a few things. the alarm had all of a sudden started going off, whenever i tried to start the car or open or unlock the doors so i didnt know how to stop that. and the car didnt tell me when my headlights were on when i got out of the car, now they do tell me to shut them off so that is cool. so that stuff got fixed . dunno what else may have been fixed by that. so what could be wrong now?? anyone have this issue? oh ya no dash board lights lit up as if there was anything telling me there was a problem. also, i do have enough gas in there, i did check the oil. that is fine. the little blue coolant light is on once in awhile, so i know the dashboard lights are still working. i did have a heavy purse and coat in the passenger side. maybe that is it? i'll have to check next time i go out. also i did open and close the door the last time it went off.. it still was dinging on and off while i was driving. i'll take it for a test drive and see if it does it again or not. i dont want to drive the car with the ding noise going off constantly. that would be annoying.

I am having the exact same problem. All doors shut, lights off then the dinging and interior lights come on. With a slight bump in the road, they go off and etc. I tracked it to my truck hatch. Try giving it a firm shut cause it doesn't latch all the way.

Since you had some work done on the door latch it could be the switch that tells the car the door isn't shut. Especially since you said that the interrior lights came on at one time.
There is probably a short in that door switch.

Another reason that happens a lot with these beetle's is the Seat belt switch. It doesn't register that your seat belt is latched and keeps on dinging.

I am sure it's nothing serious with your car but it is rather annoying.

I have some electrical gremlins in my car as well. Nothing major but when I open the drivers side door the interrior lights do NOT come on. If I open the passenger side the lights do come on. Also if I unlock the doors and enter the car and keep the door open for more than a few seconds the doors autolock and the alarm goes off since the door is open.
So my door switch is messed up as well only it is telling my car that the door is always shut and if it reads open to sound the alarm. But so far no dinging. If it did that I would have to do something about it.

In your case I bet it is either the Seat Belt or the door switch. Or maybe a little bit of both.

If it is the Seat Belt chime you can have it disabled with a use of a VAG Com

I think it is your door switch.

Here is a link that sounds very much like your issue:
