Question Manual Switch Light.

Hey everybody, I got Zeus back today fresh with a new motor for the rear spoiler. I have a question for some of you beetle wizard out there. It deploys just find and retracts just fine. The manual switch however doesn't seem to work. Is the light supposed to come on when it is automatically deployed and go off when it retracts? Or does the light only come on when you do this manually. I know the light worked when I took it in, but since the switch isn't working obviously it isn't coming on. Other than a bad switch what should I look into as the culprit, or is it a safe bet that the switch is out. ( I don't know if the switch ever worked as the old motor gear was stripped and therefor unplugged)

Thanks in advance for all the help.

I don't know if it would be the same for a 2005, but here's how mine works.

While driving, if the spoiler activates my light will turn on then it will automatically turn off on its own when the spoiler goes down on its own if I'm at a long enough light or parked.

Hitting my manual switch pops the spoiler, light also goes on.
When spoiler goes down on its own the light goes off automatically.
If I hit the switch manually to bring down the spoiler, the light turns off.

Since you have an actual spoiler light in the dash I'm sure it should work the same... but who knows... hope this helps!

thanks for the info. I assumed thats how it should work. My motor was just replace so the spoiler goes up and down smoothly automatically while driving, but the light never comes on and the manual switch doesnt work. I know the light works because it came on before the motor was switched out. Hmm I will have to dig into this a bit more. Thanks again

The Rear Spoiler warning light in the lower left corner of the instrument panel should work as follows:

In automatic mode - the light should not come on and the spoiler should raise and lower at the proper speeds. Very early models the deploy speed is about 90mph, in the later models the deploy speed was changed to 45mph. (approximate)
If the light comes on in this mode then there is a defect in the system.

Manually - the indicator light will blink if the rear spoiler is activated manually using the switch underneath the dashboard and the vehicle is below the minimum speed (12mph in later models I don't know the spec in early models) The light will go off when the vehicle exceeds that speed.

Did they replace the motor with a motor from a 2002 or newer Beetle? Because the 2000 Beetle spoiler motor wont activate until you hit 93mph. Which I have never done yet in my Beetle Now my manual switch does work and the light does come on when I hit the switch. I was going to replace the motor with a newer one that activates around 45mph but then I thought it would just be a waste of money which I can spend more effectively elsewhere.

Where can you get the 45mph motor? I can manually deploy mine with the switch but I don't think it stays up. It sounded like it went back down after a few seconds of driving. I don't understand why the made it to operate at 90mph when the legal limit in most states is no higher than 70mph.

I guess I could do the spoiler mod in the how to section but I'm not sure I want the light on all the time.

Here are the part numbers for the motors / controllers to the best of my knowledge.
Your best option in my opinion would be to see who is parting out a later turbo beetle or check your salvage yards as list / retail price is over $300.00.

1C0959733E
spoiler motor
72 KM/H

1C0959733F
spoiler motor
150KM/H

Well, VW didn't keep in mind the "Slow" Speed Limit that we have to travel here in the United States. Their Beetle's travel at 93mph/150kmh on the Autobahn all the time. Later on they got smart and replaced the motor to a more US friendly speed of 45mph.

They replaced it with a new motor (newer style) I can hear it deploy around 40 mph and retract at about 12 mph. The light never comes on. However Like I stated the manual switch does not work when I push it and the light never comes on. So I am guessing the switch may be bad?? The light worked prior to the replacement ( the motor was unplugged) so it stayed on. I assume the only problem could be the switch or a bad connection to the switch?? Everything works fine, would just like to be able to use the manual switch for cleaning and maintenance.

I noticed the light came on if the spoiler deployed under 45 mph (usually does so when it deploys at 40 mph in my car). You won't be able to manually close it until the car comes to a complete stop. (the light stays on until the spoiler is retracted) Also, the light does not come on when I manually deploy/retract the spoiler. I have done this many times when lubricated the spoiler.
