Default 2001 1.8T ignition switch

i have a 2001 t.8t beetle. the headlights, turn signals, horn, wipers, and A/C blower all won't work. Called a mechanic and he said it was probably the ignition switch. Is that something that somebody who isn't really mechanically inclined could do, and if so does anybody have any dummy proof instructions? pictures would be nice

VWVortex.com - **Ignition Switch Replacement DIY**

There ya go!

PS: It's on a Golf or Jetta but they are both MKIV type cars and it is pretty much identical on our MKIV Beetle's.

It's pretty straight forward. Be sure to look for any melted or frayed wires. If there are any then you need to replace or repair the wire(s) or it may short out the switch again.

Also did you check the fuse box on top of the battery? Not just the once plugged in but the straight flat metal ones? Notice the wires going into the fuse box. Look at the larger red and also the black wire. How do they look? Any fuses melted? The wire coming off the alternator going to the battery box is very weak and will cause fuses to melt. If this happened you need to replace that wire with a heavier gauge before you replace the fuse or in some cases the fuse box.
