Depends. How big do you want to go? How fast do you want to go? How much money are you willing to spend?

The K04-001 is basically a bolt-on and will give you something around 30 more horses with the proper fueling and software.

The K04-20 can give you a bit more than 30hp, but again you'll need proper software and fueling.

ATP is coming out with their K04 eliminators, which are sort of hybrids of the K04 and a Garrett GT28RS turbo, making for a bolt-on big turbo solution. Of course, you need software and fuling to really take advantage of that. Dynos for a GT2X kit say that it'll give you 250hp at the wheels @ 15psi.
http://www.atpturbo.com/

Of course, for a little bit more you can get a "real" GT28RS and a manifold for that turbo.

APR has nice packages for people looking to upgrade the turbo. www.goapr.com

I'm using the GT28RS as an example. THere are LOTS of turbos to choose from, all with their strengths and weaknesses when it comes to your powerband.

Do LOTS of research on the 1.8t forums at www.vwvortex.com and www.18turbo.com before doing anything. If you're myspace profile is correct then you're 15 and really should spend your money elsewhere, like books and saving for college. Chip the car and be done with it for now as that'll set you back 500-600 dollars right there.

ummmm... the k04-001 might get a 30 hp increase over a completely stock, unchipped engine.... but it will rarely get more than 5-10hp over a chipped K03S with the normal bolt ons (exhaust, intake, etc.) Just keep that in mind.

Buy a chip and a turbo back exhaust and you'll be much happier than with a big turbo. Plus if you still decide to go BT you'll be much better prepared. Your going to need that stuff with a BT anyway. Might as well buy it first.

$1500 won't get you any BT thats worth having. Either save your money and get a well put-together BT kit, or do a chip and exhaust and go from there.

I run 13.6 on the K03s, and i know my car has a 13.4 in it at least with a better launch. I'm picking up my Race Shop prepped trans this weekend, and if i could drop another 100 lbs out of the car, I'm pretty sure 13.0 might be in the realm of reality. So it all depends on how much you're going to race the car, what type of racing you'll be doing, etc.

You can't simply ask us "whats a good BT kit" without letting us know what you intend to do with the car and what you require from it. If you're drag racing, regular practice along with a chip and basic bolt ons, and some weight reduction, can get you into the mid 13's, and possibly lower. If you want to go 12's, than it would be best to upgrade to a GT28R... 11's can be had with a GT28RS and slicks (and driving talent). If you're autocrossing, well, then i'd count on the advice of the autocrossers in this forum... since i know virtually nothing about autoX, i won't claim to be able to tell you what a good setup for it is. Same for road racing.

^^^ What they said.

Do a chip and a 2.5" turbo-back and you'll have more than enough power. Upgrade the suspension later on (start with a rear swaybar) and you'll have a fun and fast little ride.

i registered to this forum specifically for the GT28RS turbo upgrade. i asked on vortex but then a user pointed me here, anyway's how is the RS on the beetle engine? do u have a Turbo S beetle? or the standard 1.8T ( came with the baby K03)? bc im in the process of installing a 1.8T into my mk 3 jetta and i've been looking at upgrade's, no rush, just trying to figure out what i can do on stock internal's (safety is a big concern also) thanks o and i forgot to mention its the 150 hp one, K03 non s, non GTi head, or whichever way u explain it, not even positive about the differences

I have the apr 93 chip and love it. Gets you up to 215 hp.
I just added k&n filter and n75 valve. Next week 2.5" full exhaust from apr gets me 18-35 HP depending on who you talk to.

P.S. If you keep your foot light and off the turbo MPG will increase. I just did my latest test going 100 miles at 60 mph got 39.45 MPG. I have a turbo S with manual 6 speed. You will find with more power you want to use it so MPG may go down depening on how you drive.

I am no tech, but I have heard of only being able to make 350whp out of a k04 set up. It's just something I have always heard.

I would recommend going with a 3" exhaust. It's just my opinion, but turbos don't like restriction. Most people I know go with a 3".

BlackTurboS is right on the money with this one. If I concentrate really (I mean REALLY) hard to drive the speed limit and not do any crazy acceleration, my S gets awesome gas mileage.
