Angry Dead NB needs intercooler

Hello all

Yesterday I let my girlfriend borrow my to go running around. Well about an hour after she left I got a phone call from her telling me that she hit a curb and the car would not start anymore. So I go and meet her and when I check the damage I see that my front bumper is cracked right in front of the tire. Then I look under it and see my intercooler with a busted lower end tank. It turns out that she didnt see the turn in and went straight into the curb.

So my next question is where can I get a replacement New Beetle Intercooler. I have tried a few pages online like parts4vws.com, IMPEX and a few others but they dont seem to carry a replacement. Can someone point me to a place that has them besides my local dealer. I would rather wait for a part to come in the mail before going to them ( long story ). Also does anyone have a part number for the intercooler? I know that the NB has a different intercooler then the Golf or the Jetta.

How about aftermarket. I really dont need a front mount right now because I dont really have the time to do the modification to the front bumper cover and other things, unless there are New Beetle specific ones out ther that work well. I have heard that the Forge side mount isn't worth it I have heard of another company that made a side mount that worked pretty well but I dont remember the name, I think it was Tyrol Sport or something.

Anyways for now I would just like a plain old OEM intercooler for now just to get my little car running again.

Thanks
Fil

Yep, my car is going into Tyrolsport in the next week or so to begin work on the upgraded SMIC for the New Beetle. The golf/jetta one won't fit (believe me, I've asked plenty of times) If her car is stock then just look for a used stock SMIC because the price of the upgraded one won't be worth it.

Hit the classifides on www.vwvortex.com and www.vwfixx.com and see if anyone has one running around. Ebay, too.

Don't overlook the local salvage yards. You will probable fine one that is either a VW only or has many late model dubs on hand.

Call around, and you should be able to source one the same day.

Good luck....TechnoTrix'd....

ps., if not, PM me and I will call one that is local to me.

Hey wawalker

Thanks for the link. I thought I looked there but I will check again. I called my dealer today and they quoted me a price of $354.00. I could not believe it was that much.

Thanks again.

Hey Fil,

There is a junkyard near me that has a NB. If you are interested, I can call them and ask for a price?

Let me know!

Is the car running now without the SMIC? It should start even with a busted end tank.

Hey hannaco

Yeah it will start but it idles very rough and I have to floor the gas pedal so it will go. It will usually go into limp mode since there is an air leak. I had it towed because I didnt want to drive it that way for too long, I didnt want to cause any damage to it.

Ah, good. I was afraid that something else was wrong. With that big hole in the SMIC, it is best not to dirve it. Losts of dirt can get into the motor that way.

Hello All

Well I have good news and bad news. The good news is that I got my new intercooler in from 1stvwparts.com and it was a perfect fit. There wasn't really to many issues installing it, just taking out the headlight housing to get to the hose that goes from the top of the I.C. to the manifold. While I had it off I made a custom I.C. water mister to spray it down when its hot outside.

Well here is the bad news, my car still has a cracked front bumper and I decided to install my Forge T.I.P. and found out that its a pain to get on the turbo inlet. I ran out of sunlight today so I will finish tomorrow.

Thanks to everyone for helping me out.

The TIP is a real pain in the rear suspension to install. I did a write up on my experience .... hopefully one of the admins can get it over here .... I was not around when the site was upgraded (deKatrinizing my life) and don't know if it was brought over. I was the Forge/Samco test case for the hose. The hardest part I had was getting the vac hose onto the side of the hose near the turbo inlet, our vac hose is a little smaller id than the one on the box cars (Golf/Jetta) so it's a much tighter fit, just lube it a little and have lots of patience, ingenuity and small hands.
