Default Spark Plug Wires?

I went to go buy factory spark plugs and wires the replace mine. The guy at the store told me that the 1.8T doesn't have spark plug wire, i only has spark plugs. Is this true?

Yes that is true. Instead of having a coil; distributor; and plug wires...each plug has its own coilpak plugged onto each sparkplug. Much more efficient. They are under that plastic engine cover.Depending on what year you have you can remove it by hand or with a 10mm socket.

It's not quite as easy as that. you have to remove a couple of things and loosen and disconnect the coilpacks to get at the plugs.

Is your car running poorly? Why are you changing the plugs in the first place? How many miles do you have on your car? No you should not have to replace the coilpaks unless you have a bad one. I've read of people getting VW to pay for their new coilpaks because there was a problem with some of them, I don't know much more than that maybe someone can elaborate.

No, coilpacks don't need to be changed unless you are getting a flashing C.E.L. with stumbling and poor acceleration. I wouldn't try to get fancy with the replacement sparkplugs though. Mine really likes the factory installed NGK's and I've heard from several different sources that it's not a good idea to try to run a "hotter" plug, although I'm not certain on that point.
