Default What did I buy??

Ok, this is going to sound absolutely insane - but I purchased my first New Beetle in November. Its a 2002 Sport version. Heres where Im really confused. All the sites that I have been to say that the '02 Turbo Beetles are 1.8L but the air cover on the top of my engine says its a 2.0L. I have searched high and low and can not find another '02 turbo that is a 2.0L. Is it possible that a previous owner did some altering? Its a 5 speed manual (not a 6 speed like the Turbo-S) and the interior is completely black leather (the Turbo-S has 2 tone seats I believe)... Did I purchase a mutant Beetle?

Regardless of what it is I absolutely love it and have never had a vehicle that was more fun to drive!

Thanks in advance! I have been reading this forum since I first bought my car and you guys all rock! I have to change my headlights tonight and found a full instructional guide on here.

Cool

Possible that previous owner had to replace the original cover?

Why do you think you have a 1.8 turbo?

there are two engine covers available--one says 1.8 turbo and the other says 20v turbo. either way, if it says turbo, you're golden. if it just says 2.0, then you've been stung because all real sports have a 1.8t and the engine cover reflects that. a 2.0 cover won't fit a 1.8t and vice versa.

Can you describe the wheels? Do they have color inserts that match the color of the vehicle?

Is it possible a color concept? Give us some more details on your rims and interior.

Pictures would be helpful.

I am happy that you are liking your new car!!!

Hi there!

You will be able to tell if it is really a sport by the seats. Does it have all black or tan seats like:

They have to be all ONE color tho. If not, it is NOT a Sport and you did get 'jipped'.

And like the cheat said your engine cover will say 20v or turbo...

Pick your engine!

1) Late-model 1.8T

2) Early-model 1.8T

3) 2.0L

Hey Castleberrie I saw somewhere on the org where someone had taken a 2.0 emblem and put it on their engine cover (I guess to make ricers think it was not a turbo) and had done a pretty good job of it. Do you have a spoiler on the top part of your hatch. And is your intake at the front of your engine like the two pictures above or is it the four tubes on the top of the engine like on the 2.0 liter engines.

No. For 2001 and 2002 VW offered a "Sport". It had the Take 5 wheels with color inserts and sport seats (all one color). It had a Sport badge on the trunk.

For 2001 it was available in Red, Black, Yellow and Silver. For 2002 it was available in Red, Black and Silver.

Spoiler?
Do you have a black panel over your rear window...if so, it's a spoiler and you have a 1.8T, if not you have a 2.0.

Also - speedometer...
Does it go to 140mph or 160mph?

You think we've asked enough questions yet?

Castleberrie must not know the response time here is very short.

I have a 2001.5 sport and it is not the APH but has the 20 V, the reason we are able to say you have any APH has nothing to do with the cover but more to do with the year, VVT was not available in 2000 started in 2001.5......

Ok, this makes me feel better. My wheels are 5 stars with the black edging to match the car. The seats are all black (which is why I thought I was duped). The cover does say 20V Turbo and it has the "Sport" emblem on the trunk. I do have the spoiler that opens at 45 mph too. I will include pictures once I get home since I dont have my camera with me. I need to buy a Bentley manual becuase I have this odd sound coming from the engine complartment when I shift but I need to make sure that my $50 manual is the right one. I cant find any info on a 20V turbo, just the 1.8V. Im wondering if my timing belt isnt my problem but from what I have read in here I wont have notice..I have almost 40,000 miles now. I cant thank you guys and gals enough for all the response!!

The 1.8t refers to liters. It's a 1.8 liter engine. You'll usually see it mentioned as the 1.8t (1.8 meaning liters, t meaning turbo).

The 20v means how many valves. (5 per cylinder) It's a 5 cylinder engine, 5 valves for each cylinder = 20 valves.

I don't think the timing belt would make any noise during shifts, so if you're hearing a noise, I doubt it's the timing belt.

It could be a diverter valve. What exactly does the sound, sound like?

4 cylinders (sp) ... 5 valves per cylinder.

My diverter valve was broken and I heard fluttering after accelerating ... right before shifting. Perhaps that is what it is?

Well, the noise is really odd and hard to describe. It is kind of like a fluttering noise. It is heard best when Im at the top of each gear and push the clutch in, almost like something spinning is slowing down and needs a bit of grease. It reminds me of a belt noise but not a squeek noise. I did pop the top off the engine and look at the timing belt this afternoon - no signs of visible wear that I can see. *Whew* Not a project I want to take on at the moment. But Im still at a loss for what the noise is. I will definitely go from here and look up a diverter valve to see what it does and sympoms that it could be failing. (I have always been really good with vehicles till this one!! Its all so foreign to me, all electronic...but I will learn!)

I feel like a moron for not realizing that the 20V was valves and not 2.0V (I have no idea what I thought the V stood for) LOL. Thank you for clearing that up for me. This is the greatest forum ever!! I took picutres but can't seem to get them on here..hehe..oh well... Thank you so much!!
