Default Parts Terminology/Searching

I've been trying to find some front end parts for my wrecked 98 TDI and I've used "uneedapart.com", "car-part.com" and eBay. The problem for me is two fold. In some cases I don't know the terminology, and in others the part isn't in the drop down lists.
For example, I need the hood latching mechanism (the part attaching to the cable) and its not on the list.
For the first problem, I need to buy all of the bracketing that fits around the headlight area on the driverside. Anybody have any clue how I even go about looking for these parts? Essentially everything except the fender around the headlight got a bit crunchy. Are there any sort of schematics that might give some sort of part number? Will I need to go to a VW dealer directly? Any pointers here would be appreciated.

Danka schoen! You da man!

Now next question.... What is the best way to go about seeking out used parts of some of these more "trivial" parts. For example, small mounting brackets, or other parts that don't show up in the drop downs on the used part search databases. There only appears to be one New Beetle in my area and it sounds like its pretty stripped. What are my options for locating these small (but vital) parts aside from buying new from a dealer? When searching on here (posting in the parts forum) should I simply reference the actual part numbers from these forms?

junkyards or the dealer, most of that trivial stuff isn't made by aftermarket manufacturers.
