Thought I would add some spark to this forum with a salt in the wounds post..

All I can say is... bout time! Maybe now we can get more people on the bandwagon to abandon their gas guzzlers and drive only what they need. Poor Detroit

Oh well, back to my humble existance...

Diesel is $2.55 at the station go to for my go juice. I'm loving it...RUG at the same station is $2.79.

Why? Why would you wish financial hardship on people, families, who already have these vehicles and are stuck with them? You do realize the hardship that Detroit's problems are causing average people in the Midwest? Just remember, "As Goes Detroit, so Goes America." I have personally owned nothing but VW, but I have determined that when the time comes I'm most likely going domestic.

I think your attitude on this is simply wrong.

Saved almost 1500 in fuel costs since I bought mine... What's everyone elses excuse....?

The sad truth is that the consumers who buy low milage cars in the US are not the only ones to blame, because with the exception of the newest Japanese hybrids, carmakers both foreign and domestic do not sell in the US their most fuel efficient models. Sometimes out of business choice, sometimes out of US gov regulations.

For example, say you want to buy a small sedan that gives over 40mpg hwy. For 2007 in the US, no diesels are available except for a $50k Mercedes (thanks to EPA regulations), so you only have a handful of choices. For 2007 in Europe and japan, there are dozens of cars available with over 40 mpg. In Europe it's mostly diesels, but the point is that car buyers in the US do not have the same choices when it comes to fuel efficiency. GM's Opel and Ford sell outstanding diesels in Europe, but they don't sell them here...

Google the Ford Focus TDCi or the Opel Astra CDTI ECOTEC. Those have been available in Europe for a few years now with plenty of engine choices... and these are American carmakers...

Certainly don't wish harm....to most people. But the almighty dollar determines my driving habit. I just hope BD becomes more widely available and cheaper. Although, I suppose once prices goes to $4/gallon and up, BD will. And unfortunately, too many people like their SUVs (and not out of neccessity). For them, I have no sympathy and exercise my pompous self-righteousness.

Anyway, local diesel price was around $3.02 but I came back from a trip which I filled up at $2.49/gallon.

Default Dick & W blame not:; they did absolutely nothing

The other side promised no new taxes; rather give us some money back to spend on the rising price of fuel.

Now think about this too, the higher fuel prices affects us all in the cost of transporting kids to and from school. Our taxes used to pay for school activities are forced to redirect to school buses. Indirect tax rise? I think so.

I get what you're saying.

I have always thought of the increase in gas prices as good and bad...bad in that it will cost more, and I pity the working stiff with a 200 mile commute who already drives a Corolla and can't get a job closer to home, or the self employed landscaper who needs to drive his F250 with trailer to get from job to job.

But good because it will influence the amount of extra driving people do. Maybe they'll walk the 1/2 mile to the bus stop to pick up their kids, or pick up milk and bread and the dry cleaning in the same trip. It kills me to drive by the neighborhood bus stop when it is 75 and sunny and see all the cars lined up, idling, waiting for the bus to drop off their kids. I think many people are wasteful in their driving, and if paying $4 a gallon causes them to stop and think about how they could alter their habits and save fuel/money, then all the better, especially for the environment.

The Japanese are about to eat Detroit's lunch again. Honda will have their diesel vehicles available in the U.S. either next year or 2009.

Dire predictions of over $4 a gallon for gas this summer. Maybe that will finally motivate me to finish up the Mercedes which will run on B100. Locally, it's less than gas or regular diesel.

As far as wastefulness, I don't get people sitting in their cars idling in the parking lot when it is 75 degrees outside. That's room temperature! Roll down the freaking window and turn off your car... Geez.

Honda probably won't bring a diesel to the USA until CARB (Calif) approves the sale of diesel powered automobiles. Unlike some manufacturers, like VW, which sells all of its models in 2 segments....1 to meet federal standards and the other to meet Calif standards, Honda sells all of its automobiles to meet 50 state standards, which includes Calif and the New England states that have adopted Calif emissions guidelines. We are special here, which means a special recipe for fuel, unlike anything the rest of the country uses. That is why our cheapest fuel is around $3.30/gal.....though I did see diesel posted at truck stops this last weekend in the $2.80's/gal.

Meanwhile, your governor is supporting biodiesel production and all of the business and automotive press is reporting sometime between 2008 and 2010 that Honda will sell diesel cars in the U.S....

I think it will happen. And $4-$5 per gallon gasoline will put even more political pressure on making it happen.

Two days ago the Texas House passed a bill that would repeal the fuel tax for 90 days (summer months). Supposed to be an immediate decrease in price of 20 cents/gallon. The bill still has to be passed by the Senate, but they're saying it should happen.

I think that'll be great... until the 90 days is up and the tax comes back. Bet you won't be able to find gas on day 89

Bet by then I'll have about 100 gallons of the cheaper diesel in reserve at home, at least till the bio-d plumbing is finished...

Have you heard anything else on this? I'm sure something will happen to derail the whole idea....

Meanwhile, I'm just happy that for the first time since I got the TDI in September, diesel is cheaper than RUG.

Even at $.20 more per gallon, if you put 20k miles/year in your car, you'd still save around $1000 in fuel. But I hear you, you're saving even more now!
