Default Blue coolant light

Hi

I'm getting a blue coolant light when I cold start my tdi beetle. After a few miles it does go out.

Is this normal behaviour? Is there a problem like a faulty temp sensor?
I miss an engine temperature gauge and was wondering if anybody had fitted any extra gauges to their beetles.

Any info on this would be appreciated.

Thanks

Joe

this is normal. It is telling you the engine is cold, it is recomended that you don't rev past 2500 rpm until this light goes out.

On the other hand I believe when it flashes red you have low coolant and when it is steady red you are over heating.

Flashing red = Stop now or it'll explode.

Solid red can be low coolant.

Incorrect. Flashing equals low coolant level. Solid means overheating. Just had this happen yesterday as I recently flushed my coolant. It burped out an air bubble as I was pulling out of the garage and it started flashing at me. Top off and all is good.

Blue is normal and just an indication that the engine is cold.

RTFM.

Gauges can be installed...check my sig. Excellent units, made by an Avionics company that also happens to be run by TDI enthusiasts. 100% made in the USA and excellent customer service. I had a question last friday night and I had an answer from the owner by 6 AM Saturday morning.

Do you have any pics of the gauges installed? I too work for an instrument/avionics shop in Phoenix and will buy one of these McNally's just because I think its neat. And I would like to have a temp gauge. Whats it look like in a beetle?

Default answer

acording to the manual, and sourced by my mechanic matthew at zahntech ( he's a tdi guy), the blue. Light for a few minutes is normal cold engine, blue steady is malfunction. Red flashing is low coolant or overheating or blown fuse. The 2002 apparently doesn't have a solid red light.

Here they are installed and cruising down the road. Install was very easy and all components are top-notch. If you buy the gauge kits everything is included to install them. Unfortunately they are currently in a cheap and ugly Glowshift gauge pod...STILL waiting on my Bernt pod to come in.

Default Blue Coolant Light

Hi Joe,

The Blue "Coolant/Cold Engine" Light comes on when the engine is cold. After the engine warms up (coolant) - the engine is now at normal operating specifications and the Blue Light goes out. Normal German Engineering - if your engine ever gtes hot/overheats - that same Blue Light turns Red (if that ever happens, immediately turn off your engine)

Another cool VW feature on the VW New Beetle (all VWs) - when you pull up on the Parking Brake, the day running lights go off. This is normal - apparently, in Europe, when the running lights are off on a vehicle, European drivers know that the car has stopped (with the motor on or off). American cars do not have this feature - so when you see an American car with day running lights on - it may be moving or it may be stopped - can't tell.
