Default 1999 Beetle GLS TDI which oil?

Hi,

I live in a smaller town and the only place I can find 5W-40 Castrol Syntec is at the local VW dealer where they want $8.50 a quart! I was looking around on the TDI site and some say its OK to use Shell Rotella T 5W-40 and some say no. Any ideas?

Thanks!

Rotella T 5w-40 is an EXCELLENT oil...particularly the new CJ-4 formulation...though it is now more expensive than the CI-4 version. Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck 5w-40 also works very well.

For an ALH like yours, use either with confidence!

Yup, I used Rotella 5W-40 synthetic as well only because it is hard to get to Mobil DELVAC 1 which is truly a 505.01 synthetic. I've been using it since I had the Jetta TDI with no major problem with turbo or sludging. I usually change the oil before it hits 5K miles. I do need to add a partial quart every so often though. I do recommend AMSOIL Synthetic Diesel Oil as the change interval on that and DELVAC 1 is 10K miles. I read somewhere that the Shell Rotella Sythetic is not 100% synthetic, rather, it is a blend.

Whoa whoa whoa...back the truck up. You have a 2006, dieseldriver, which is the PD engine. TOTALLY different oil requirements for the 04-06 TDI engines. You MUST USE 505.01 VW approved oils. Rotella 5w-40 is not. DELVAC 1 IS NOT. Unless you want to spend $4 grand plus for a new head, I would strongly suggest getting the proper 505.01 oil.

Oil change intervals using proper oil is 10k miles.

x2!!!

Dieseldriver, There's a whole lot of information over on tdiclub.com that you should read up on. Check out the TDI101 forum. You will most likely not find the right oil for a pd TDI on the shelf of your local parts store. Amsoil european diesel synthetic has a 505.01 rating on it but others will argue that it's meaningless. I order mine from www.autohausaz.com since they have free shipping on orders over $50. I've been using Total Quartz Ineo 5W30 in my PD(https://www.autohausaz.com/search/pr...tnumber=802306)

Did not know that, thanks, I will be sure to put in 505.01 from now on. You mean DELVAC1 is not 505.01 approved oil? I can assure you the TDIClub members rave all over DELVAC1.

Hey, thanks. It is just so pain looking for 505.01 and it is not convenient at all driving to nearest VW dealer, plus, they are so expense. I bought stuff from Autohausaz.com before for my Bimmer, I'll give them a try. I'll drain it out hopefully by next weekend. Thanks folks.

"pump duce's" (505.01) 6.50 per liter + shipping.

How far is Torrington from Greenwich? I can pickup after work. That's a darn good deal!

I just Googled it and it is only 1 hours and 37 minutes. I am taking a trip to Trumbull probably in a few weeks so I can pickup the goodies in the morning and go to work? What time do you normally open?

Hmm, the hours wouldn't work for me. What would it cost to ship to ZIP 07627 for two jugs?
